This shot is amazing. It truly captures the movement of the moment and really reminds me of the very famous Paul Caponigro shot "Running White Deer"

It is better than 90% of the work I see on forums.

There is a wide range of opinion here and I appreciate the various points of view, It doesn't do anything for me however I can see how others might like it.

Ok then heres the reason I like it and I think it won. First it takes the antelope beyond the noun or as Edward Weston referred to it, the obvious. It's more than just a photograph of an antelope. You can't swing a dead cat and not hit a photo of an antelope that looks just like an antelope. A noun. Those images are so very common. Nothing really special about any of those shots. Yep, they're tack sharp and look just like an antelope. A million of those out there. If you want your work to be special it can't be special if it's like everything else out there. Push beyond the obvious or the noun and show me what the subject is to you the photographer. This images goes beyond the noun or the obvious.. When I think of antelope, I think of speed and motion. Especially up and down motion. This image goes beyond the noun and captures more of the essence of the animal. That and the fact it separates itself from all the other shots that all look pretty much the same is the reason I think it won.

If nothing else, this thread is proof enough of the artistic merit of the photograph.

If I had entered this contest, the issue I would have with this picture winning is that this isn't just an art or broad-themed photography contest, it's a wildlife contest- and as such, it seems like the subject should clearly be some form of wildlife; if I hadn't been informed of what I was looking at, I'm not sure I would have even known that what I was viewing was a picture of wildlife. I get the whole "artistic vision" aspect, but it seems like if I enter a contest featuring a specific subject, a person should have to at least be able to easily distinguish the fact that the subject of my photo is actually pertinent to the contest theme. Obviously this is just my opinion though and not that of the judges of this contest.

I love this photo--it's great. It does something that all of those gearheads who focus on expensive glass and attaining the SHARPEST possible image will never achieve with their standard shots of wildlife. To those who say 'Anyone can do this' -- I say: Bullsheisse. I also say: if you think you have accidental shots that are as compelling aesthetically, it's probably because you're not discerning enough to tell the difference.

Now this doesn't mean that I think that this image makes the photographer great in some way. There's no way I can judge how great the photographer who shot this photo is given this photo only. But the image--well, that I can talk about.

Seriously!?! I wouldn't know the exact species, but can see that it's some sort of gazelle like animal.

I could probably guess...or it could be any number of breeds of horse with Chrismas antlers on. :-P

Intentional movement shots are very vogue at the moment.

It is a bit too blurry for my taste though. For me something should be reasonably sharp, like the head of one animal.
