Bah - what about a replacement for the G6 and the Pro 1?

Ditto. It's not looking good for either product line. I haven't given up hope completely, but I suspect that the S3 IS and the A700 are supposed to fill the gap left by the G and Pro. Maybe from a marketing standpoint, but not from a photographer's.
Bah indeed.

I don't see how the A700 replaces the G, since it doesn't have a hotshoe. I guess I can kind of see the S3 replace the Pro1. But if you have seen the pictures from a Pro1, you might not think so. I have seen pictures from the S2 and it does not compare in my opinion.

Oh, the reason I think the hot shoe is important is that these cameras have problems in low light. As a professional flash and you will be suprised at how far this goes to help that problem.

Maybe I should try get another G6 or a Pro 1, as the price of them has dropped a LOT since they debuted in 2004.........It will be a sad day if Canon doesn't replace these models.

I wonder if the Lens cap issue will still be present with the S3 or not!

Agreed. Also notice that neither allows RAW. That, and the hotshoe issue, which I hadn't noticed, do make me think there's going to be another model. Here's hoping.

I'm curious what most of you would have expected in a new G-series or pro-series cam. Be grounded in what technology would have actually made it to the new G7/pro2, and what trades you would live to get those new features.

For example, the pro1 is already so great... except it could use some minor changes:

  • digic II (faster start/operation/screen update/focus),
  • focus lamp (no biggie w/ strap-attached photon-2 micro light),
  • ETTL II (that uses the flash focus lamp),
  • centered Tripod mount (unless it increased size)
  • correction for the occassional vignetting,
  • lower noise on sensor,
  • built in filter threads (not an adapter) unless it increased size,
I would not have traded the small form factor for an IS lens, or more noise for higher megapixels. No f/2.0 with the trade of higher CA or other lens problems and increase in size.

My pro2 would have been a minor, tiny upgrade from the pro1.

Just curious guys...

I've seen this S2 cameras before and now, just from the links that you posted, the new S3 looks so darn nice. What are the differences anyway? S2 has this 12x zoom... other than that? Ok, to make it short, which one is BETTER in general?

The S3 is just the newer version--in general, that means most of the specs will be better. Whether that makes the camera better or not depends a lot on your needs. However, check out the specs at www.dpreview.com (external link).

curious again...

on the photography challenges, only G series and Pro 1 are allowed. How about the S1 or S2 or the new S3? Well, I don't have a S model camera - just out of curiousity.
