The season for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds here is finally over and I thought some might be interested in a brief review. For those not interested, yes, there are pictures!

I made sure to put out feeders and flowers as early as possible this year (March 31) to attract in-coming birds. The first bird observed at my feeding station was the adult male shown below who arrived on April 13.

He had the feeder pretty much to himself until approximately July 1st when fledglings and females left their nests. The rest of the Summer was a mixture of females and juvenile males with the main "combatants" being the juvenile males.

As Summer progressed to Fall, it was pretty easy to see the locals fattening up for their pending migration.

And I knew when October rolled around that their local days were coming to an end. I believe the young male in the next 2 images was on his way South and stopped by for a few days to tank up. He was the last RTH I saw and was last seen on October 11.

I couldn't help but get a sense of sadness from the last portrait, and I'm not sure whether it was from the bird or me! I had almost exactly 6 months of hummer activity and was thankful for the opportunities they afforded me to photograph them. I'm certainly looking forward to their return in the Spring of 2015! Thanks for having a look at these last images and I look forward to your comments.

Very nice, Steve, and yes the juvie males definitely are the feistiest as they learn their way around. I see you have all the preferred flowers planted for them too, so no doubt you get your fair share of these visiting your yard. I have never seen the blue salvia (is that what it is?) around here anywhere, I may have to look into it. 3 and 6 are my faves in this set.

Thanks for sharing this last bit of Hummingbird information with all of us. I too am looking forward to next springs arrivals. Now those of us in the colder climates can look forward to white backdrops!

Excellent shots and a great story! 3, 4 and 6 for me. What kind of flowers do you have there?

Thanks as always Ian. Your comments are appreciated and enjoyed. The "blue" Salvia actually has the common name Black & Blue Salvia and I'm not sure if it'd survive as a perennial in your neck of the woods or not.

Well done Steve, great write up too.

Very nice of you to comment Red and I'm glad the text wasn't too boring.

Haha Sandy, too bad you can't photograph hummers on a white background. Thanks for your friendly comment and we'll both look forward to their return.

Very kind of you Al. It's good to know they'll be back as I've had them around all 15 years I've lived here.

I'm sorry Rog....I didn't mean to make your lack-o-hummeritis get worse! :) Oh OK, I did, but in a good way. Thanks for your generous comments too.

Thank you Clay for such a nice comment....glad you liked them.
The red flowering plant is commonly called Bee Balm and the blue flowering plant is called Black and Blue Salvia. Give `em a try.

Wow what a fantastic series! It is hard to pick a favorite as I love them all! You are so lucky to have them for six months. I have them from mid May to about the 3rd week in September at the longest. I am always sad when they leave but at least we have the beautiful pictures to remember them until next year.

Awesome shots. I had many of them this summer at my feeders, never did capture any great shots of them. My summer time is very busy and kept putting things off until tomorrow until it was too late. It is sad to see the feeder still half full and no birds, here one day and gone the next. Photos like these will help us make it through another cold winter looking forward to their arrival next year.

Love your generous comments/compliments Carol! It's interesting that they arrive and leave your area at almost a month difference from my area on both ends of the migration. We'll anxiously await their return next year.....while perusing pictures from this year :)

Thank you Steve....ever so kind you are! I know the feeling of here today gone tomorrow and that's why I made special efforts this year to photograph these little aerial acrobats. Now I can't wait `till next year!
