In my experience Mafrotto make some good tripod heads, their ball heads are just not among them! High quality ball heads need not be silly money so I would suggest you have a look at these two:

If funds are limited then the Tripo RS3 takes a lot of beating:

The RS3 does not have a QR clamp so you will need to add something like this:

Wow thanks for all the replies guys, I didn't think anyone had replied until I logged on today, haven't got the email notifications for some reason. Will defiantly look into all your suggestions.

I have used a Manfrotto 055PROB for years. Before that it was a Bogan 3021 (the same tripod before Manfrotto bought them). They are good tripods and will serve you well.

BUT DON'T BUY THEIR BALL HEAD. The Manfrotto ball heads are no good.
I use a Sirui K30x which is not too expensive and very good. If I wanted to spend more, I would get a RRS ball or an Acratech. But don't buy Manfrotto.
