okay, so i have the 17-40 F4L in my B&H shopping cart and would like someone to reaffirm me in purchasing it with the 17-55 2.8 IS coming out.

my reasons for sticking with the 1740
#1. 1755 wont be out for 3 months
#2. itll mainly be for landscape, and other outdoor uses, so 2.8 isnt worth the price for me, nor the IS really
#3. for the price of the 17-55 i can buy a 580EX and a tripod on top of the 1740 and it'll still be less money
#4. superior L build
#5. EF mount (good for future cameras, and resale value)

someone please affirm/add to my arguement. and if theres something so great about the 17-55 2.8 that i need to wait for me please do tell.

Go ahead and get it. Make sure you type in the code psjan in seach to get a few bucks knocked off the price. Once you get it and you see you don't like it you can always make a little off it or at least get your money back on ebay.

I'd go for the 17-40 myself, not only will the new one take a while to hit the shops but it will also take a month or two is discover any fault that demands a return, same as the last two lenses, and discover if it's really any good anyway. But it could just be a good offering too, but the price looks a bit OTT to me ... but so does the kit lens price ;-)a Truth is you don't need 2.8 or IS. You also have your 50mm 1.4 which is excellent, so you'll be well covered with the L.

I got a feeling I'm going to be getting a 17-40L when I get a little bonus in June. It's my 3rd pick but I don't see anyway around it (unless I can grow to be satisfied with my 17mm Tokina). First, I want a 16-17-18mm f/2.8 prime from Canon but there is no such animal. Second, I want the 16-35L but can't even near afford it. Thank goodness it's a focal length I don't offen use.

I went with 17-40 f/4 after reading this review. http://luminous-landscape.com …/lenses/canon-17-40.shtml (external link) There have been some complaints in other threads about bad copies, but mine is OUTSTANDING!!! I have already taken hundreds of shots with this lens and it rarely leaves the camera for the most part. The price and weight are extra bonuses. Someday when I have a full frame camera, my 24-70 will fill this role.

The 17-40L is an amazing lens indeed _ I doubt you'd be sorry.

I think your reasoning is sound. I certainly wouldn't give up my 17-40L. However I think IS would be nice for landscapes. You're not always going to have a tripod with you.

I've had a bitter experience with the 17-40L. Tried three lenses, all three have had softness issues on the left side of my photos.

Most people seem to really love this lens and that softness issue aside, I can see why. It would have been a great lens, otherwise.
