I may be stupid; in fact I'm sure I am but I can't for the life of me think why anyone would take sports shots as a joke? Does it mean only shots of sports that are considered to be serious i.e. no shots of the kids egg and spoon race at the local school sports day or does it mean that unless you're an accomplished sports photographer and your shots are up to pro standard don't post them here? I'm sure the rather confusing wording is putting off many budding sports shooters from posting here, can I have some clarification as to who is allowed to post and what kind of shots you don't wish to see here please ?

I wouldn't think egg and spoon races would go here only because nobody I know considers it a sport. However, kids tee ball or little league should definitely go here. They don't have to be pro level shots (Lord knows mine aren't), but they do need to contain a sport. Maybe egg and spoon races should go in "People"?

I just can't see the need for the "Serious" part, I don't see only Serious Macro or Only Serious People or Serious any other part of this forum. Why does the Sports section feel it needs this proviso when none of the others do, I think we are all serious about our photography and posts.

Okay - a little history here. Not more then a year ago the sports forum used to get all kinds of things considered "sporty"... like pictures of a chaps "sports" car parked in a parking lot. Perhaps "serious" is not the best word.... but it was intended to help people pause and really think if their shot was a sports shot - a people shot - or a transportation shot. Believe me, there were plenty of threads about whether a race car parked is a sports shot - or if "sports" fishing is a sport at all. If in your mind it is a sport... post it. If there is any doubt - maybe there is a better home for it. It really doesn't matter. And if it is in the wrong place - one of the mods will effeciently move it to it's rightful home.

Edit: ah... there you go.... told you they were effecient;)

Well one thing I am serious about is that it is the "share photos/sports" section with the emphasis on photo sharing. Since there was no photo sharing going on in this thread nor any sign of any photos being shared in the near future, it's been moved to "forum talk" which is the appropriate place to discuss forum policy.

As to what is "serious" or not in terms of sports photography... interesting question. Let's see what the other members think.

It just seems to make the section sound somewhat elitist, I also think moving this post to the "Forum Talk" section some what counter productive. I started this thread to try and get clarification as to just what was meant by "serious" on the Sports section as I and I'm sure others were not sure. This is the last place I would think to look for clarification of something in the Sports Section, perhaps the mods could change the wording to some thing less confusing; after all it's not going to stop some one who takes his "Sports car seriously" from posting as the wording stands.

Discussing how the forums works and what should be posted were belongs in Forum Talk not in the individual forums.

Yes well perhaps you're right, I was thinking more along the lines of someone else coming along later on and wondering the same thing as I did, the only way they could find out what is meant by "serious" is to start another post as I had to. That post would again get moved here and so on, it needs wording better IMHO.

What do You suggest then? The wording should ensure that those photos that really are not sports photos are not posted in the sports section.

I'm speechless.
I changed it to "Sports photography" so for all those who take written text literally there is no chance of mistake.

Well that's a real tuffy isn't it? Many sections spill over into others, I'm sure there's just as many; if not more spiders; bugs and flowers in the "Macro" section as there is in the "Nature & Animals" section. Also a lot of the sports shots would be equally at home in the "People" section, does a race car belong in the "Sports" section or the "Transportation" section? I'm sure there's a lot of boy racers out there with wide wheels and a noisy exhaust system who genuinely think that their pride and joy belongs in the "Sports" section. Probably best how it is now thanks to Pekka's edit, let people post how they think is wisest and let the moderators move the ridiculously out of place ones to there relevant sections.

I think you'll find most of the regular posters in the Sports section are well capable of deciding whether the shots are appropriate or not.

As an example, the other week i thought of doing a Grid Girls thread, as i have a "few" shots ;) However i didn't see the Sports section as being the appropriate place for a complete thread, whereas 1 or 2 shots included in a post from a Major Race meeting would be acceptable. In the end i didn't start the thread.

I wouldn't even post track-day shots in there, as it is not Sport, even though it takes place at Major Sporting venues.

No need to change anything IMHO.

Now is that no need to change from how it was; or how it is now? See how easily confused I am.
The clarification wasn't for the regular posters it was for newbies like me coming to the Sports section for the first time.

How it was previous to this thread. How's that for clarity ? :)

Being a "Newbie" is a bit of a cop-out to be honest with you. I may have joined in Nov 2004, but i didn't really post anything until early last summer. I found it quite easy to pick up the general flow of things, partly due to the fact that the regulars in "Sports" are a generally friendly bunch and more than willing to offer tips & advice.

I find people in the other sections of this forum are generally friendly also but they don't feel any need for any confusing and some what mildly aggressive addendum, nope; I think it's better how it is now.
