It seems when you start to look at new macs and monitors that $3000.00 comes into the picture fairly quickly. Staying under $1500 seems to fit my budget better at this time.

What about purchasing a pre owned or refurbished mac computer and monitor to get into a decent system for a better price? This would be used for photo editing now and maybe a bit of video.

Considering a late 2012 version mac mini I7 quad core or a macbook laptop, possibly non retina and a NEC Pa 241w or 271w monitor?

Questions:

1) Have any of you done the same? Where did you purchase these items used?
2) what do you think of my above gear options?

You can get a great deal on used Mac gear right now, lots of people selling to upgrade to new models. I just sold 2 iMacs to purchase the new retina iMac. I buy and sell a lot of stuff on FM, there are several apple products for sale over there.
