Which Non-L prime would pair well with 24-70 ii?

So I finally took the plunge and got a 24-70 ii. So far so good, I think this lens will work for 90% of what I want to shoot with my 6D.

I basically blew out my lens budget with this new acquisition, so I'm going to sell off most of my current lenses.

I'd like to keep/acquire a prime lens to pair with the zoom. It has to be fairly inexpensive non-L prime for budgetary purposes. My main uses would be a lighter general walkaround lens (fairly rare, I usually use my Fuji X100s for this purpose), a backup for the zoom, and something a bit faster for when I want more light or DOF control (probably main purpose).

I love my 85mm 1.8, but I think if I just have one prime, something in the 35mm - 50mm range works better. IMO the 35mm f2 IS I have is my best prime, but it would also fetch me the most money if I sell it, plus only one stop advantage from the 24-70 (though does have IS). Most economical choice would be to just keep the old trust 50mm 1.8 ii.

Thoughts?

On a FF, 85 is pretty versatile and it's a true prime, with all it's advantages (buttery bokeh, fast & accurate AF, thin DOF).

what are your needs that specifically restrict you to "non l" may I ask?
Price?

Some L lenses are bargains too. The two that come immediately to mind are the 135mm and the 200mm f/2.8

Other bargain Canon prime lenses I often recommend are the 85mm f/1.8, the 100mm f/2 and the 28mm f/1.8
For bargain price, get the 40mm pancake. I think this is the greatest little lens bargain going!

Definitely price.

I had the 40 before and really liked it, but I don't think it really gives me anything since it's not faster than the 24-70, and for compactness I have smaller cameras.

The Sigma 50A and 35A are great and can both be picked up for a great price used. I really enjoy both of these as walk-arounds but definitely not light weight.

I wouldn't worry about the budget, get the 35mm 1.4 (any) when you have enough.

I have the 28 1.8, 35 IS and 50 1.4 in that range. If I had the 24-70 II, I'd sell it and get a 24L II.

24-70 + 135L on two bodies is a hell of a combo.... But since you say non L, 135 f2.8 soft focus. The 135 is a good 70-200 replacement sort of.

What about the EF 35 f/2 IS? If you are not shooting moving subjects, the IS along with f/2 gives you a lot of versatility.

They are not currently listed in your signature, but you have your answer - keep one of these two. Keep the one you feel is going to work for you the best. Otherwise a f/1.4 version of either (Sigma or Canon on 35mm & Sigma 85).

Personally I'd keep both. Each does a different job, and you only have to carry one at a time with your zoom. They also are both smaller than the f/1.4 versions.

If you are looking for a lens to complement the 24-70II, then something longer or wider would make more sense. With the 6d's great high ISO and the 24-70's great IQ I don't think a prime that is only 1 stop faster is going to be particularly useful; you've already said for lightweight you don't use your SLR. If you just want a security blanket in case the 24-70 breaks that's a different story.

Non-L primes that are great values: 35/2IS, 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 100/2

Current: 5DM3, 6D, 8mm fish, 24-105/4IS, 35/2IS, 70-200/2.8IS, 85/1.8, 100-400/IS v1, lensbaby composer with edge 80, 580's and AB800's
Formerly: 80D, 7D, 300D, 5D, 5DM2, 20D, 50D, 1DM2, 17-55IS, 24-70/2.8, 28-135IS, 40/2.8, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 70-200/4IS, 70-300IS, 70-200/2.8, 100 macro, 400/5.6, tammy 17-50 and 28-75, sigma 50 macro & 100-300

Agreed. Lets not forget some of the wider oldies. The 28 1.8, and 24 2.8 are both good, and both inexpensive, relatively.

I'll agree with this too. Well to a point, sometimes 1 stop faster makes the difference worth it (but 2 stops are better).

No offence but are you sure you want sale your 85mm 1.8.
IMO the 85mm 1.8 is one of my better lenses.

If I am going to have a prime in addition to a zoom, for me personally I want at least two stops of advantage. So if I had the 24-70/2.8 II I would want a 1.4 prime to pair with it. Personally I would buy a prime longer than 70mm and just call the 24-70 more than good enough in that range- at least until you can afford at least a Sigma Art prime or L prime.
