Nice, sharp shot, Jessi, but you're about a stop over exposed.

So what do I need to do to bring that down?

I like the second one with the helmet a bit off center. The first with the brightness to the right is distracting.

Thanks for your feed back! I agree on the right being distracting.

Hard to say depending on your lighting. You should be able to adjust the exposure in Lightroom. You can try Lightroom and Photoshop for 30 days if you don't have it.

Looking at it the first image, the blacks seem washed on my monitor instead of black that is probably indicating over exposure. Also you can heal out the 2 distracting bits on the left side of your son's face in the shadows of the helmet if so desired.

I do have LR and that is where I edited these pics. I will mess with it a little and see what can do. Thanks!

If you're going for a certain look, go for it! :)

Right i was going for the dull/washed out look. So maybe that is why it looks over exposed?

I didn't realize you were going for the washed out look, but you may be losing data. If you look at the histogram, you're all the way to the right, but that could be the white area just to the right of his helmet.

I opened the first image in ACR and copied it as you submitted it and then I just select the "auto" option and copied that screen so you could see the differences.

Love the composition, looks like he's about to play the final game on the season.

As mentioned above the back ground on the right, of #4 is very distracting, I don't think it's all that over exposed, dropping your highlights would bring some colour into the skin. If the look you want is a bit bright, great.
Great tight portrait.

My quick 2c on the image:

You guys are great! Thank you so much for helping me out!

Two hot shoes...How did you do that to the background? I use Lightroom, so not sure if I can do what you did.

I cheated and used Photoshop ;)
Using the pen tool to make a selection and then, mostly, brushing in colours to match what the background might have looked like compared to the other side.

The grading was all Lr though. It's a great photo you took.
