I'm curious as I've seen various 1d bodies, mostly the older ones that still look perfect, literally. Makes me think someone disassembled and repainted/refinished it to get more money out of it. Wouldn't this be more trouble than its worth? Hiding something? I get a major feeling that it is too good to be true.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about bodies I see for sale on ebay.

Aren't they all injection mold plastic (same color all the way through)?

Don't understand why you would paint this besides trying to cover blemishes and deceive a buyer. Personally I'd be pissed to spend coin on a body just to find out it was painted after the paint wore through.

Who cares about a little wear anyways? I like to keep my stuff nice looking cosmetically too but in reality it's just a tool and as long as the tool works it shouldn't matter too much.

I think the early 1d bodies are a magnesium frame.

Underneath a plastic shell though right? I honestly don't know.

The 1D series is painted magnesium. It's not powder coated, but it is fairly resilient paint. I would find it highly unlikely that someone would go through the nightmare of disassembly just to paint it, AND paint it perfectly.

So after some quick searches on the net it looks like they are indeed "Magnesium alloy shell with fake leather anti-slip covering".

I touched up parts of my old 1Ds2 with heavy masking and textured automotive spray paint. Looked pretty good actually! Had the same flat matte finish.. sorry I don't have pictures of it tho. Held up about a year or two, but by the time I sold it (4yrs later) it had worn off.

(FYI I originally did it when I got the camera used, to appease my own OCD.. I sold it locally, so none of that "deceiving the buyer" nonsense went on- for the record)

Hmm I just realized something. The white lettering for the buttons would be impossible to reproduce so I guess that adds some peace of mind.

Masking and an X-Acto knife. You could do it if you took the time.

Some people just look after their gear better I guess. I owned a couple of 1D iv's that I got used one looked like new while the other looked like it had been tied to the back of a newlyweds car and driven into the sunset. Both were priced accordingly.

I got my 1DX brand new and have done my best to keep it looking good as I know it will impact the resale value.

After reading this I immediately started thinking about a re-paint. Hot pink, anyone?
