I took this shot last Saturday at the Japanese garden in Portland, OR. This particular tree has been photographed many times before by many photographers, so in a way, it is nothing new; however, I consider myself lucky because I caught it at a peak fall color.
As usual, comments and critique are welcome.

I like the composition - looks like you did the "Avatar Color" thing to it ;)

sapearl, not sure what "Avatar Color" means... :o
In any case, no color modification, or anything like that. No "fancy" processing here at all.
Thanks for the comment, BTW... :)

Colors seem really vivid for "no color modification", but great photo nonetheless

Have you seen the movie Avatar? Some of the colors in that movie have been pushed to fluorescence for the special otherworldy effect. This is a pretty picture and somewhat graphic in effect.

If you are saying that you did not turn up the saturation during processing all I can say is that on my calibrated monitor the colors are extremely bright and nearly glowing. It is an attractive scene but not rendered in a natural way. I don't mean this as criticism - just stating what I see on my monitor.

Very overly shot... yet I never tire of it. Great shot!

You are lucky to have leaves in the foreground. I was there Thursday and their weren't any leaves on the ground.

No, I haven't seen the movie Avatar... Don't care much for SF movies...
Anyway, of course I did use saturation in LR, and contrast as well, but not much more than what I normally do. And, while I respect your opinion and critique (remember, I asked for critique in my initial post), you are one of the very few viewers of this image that mentioned the colors being "extremely bright". Please take a look at my flickr gallery, and see the comments on this image. Out of over 8000 views of this image for past 2 days, strangely (no sarcasm!) I got no comments on "too vivid colors". It makes me wonder, though, if the viewers are too reluctant to express the criticism, or your monitor needs re-calibration. :)

Thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated!

Exactly... that's the way Flickr is.. all kudos and no cc. ;

It is a lovely shot, but very, very saturated/vivid to me as well.

That's an "extremely" over-saturated image. Not that it's a bad thing, I quite like it. But one thing I've found, is that most members on "every" photography forum I frequent will criticize that for being "not natural."

The image hit flickr's Explore, had over 700 "faves", over 60 comments in a day and not a single person reported "over-saturation". Wonder what kind of monitors they have, or as I said before, no one there bothered honestly criticizing the image...

Also, I have viewed this on at least 4 different devices (my home monitor, my work monitor, and 2 phones), and while the image did seem a bit vibrant on my Samsung phone, I honestly didn't notice any "over-saturation" on any other display.

I was told I should print this one, so I guess I should report back how it turns out... :)

The colors are definitely boosted, as they are in a number of your shots. It doesn't detract from the images and gives them a much more vibrant look; but certainly isn't 'natural' looking. A lot of folks won't mention stuff like that because they a) like the effect, b) don't notice and just think it's a cool photo or c) don't feel it's their place to critique.

You have some absolutely great pics of the PNW in your stream; the rainbow behind a clover field is wonderful.

You are a bit sensitive. Nobody is saying it looks bad but the strong saturation is noticable, especially to an experienced photographer. There is a market for this sort of processing so dont take the criticism badly. But dont pretend that you are getting honest critique on flickr.

I would also call it over saturated... just look at the greens.
Not that that is a bad thing, I still like it a lot.

Don't use Flickr as a critique barometer. I doubt the overwhelming majority of members really know much about photography besides taking snaps of family and pets. On the other hand I might tend to use this forum in that manner because anyone bothering to get to a post count over 100 is probably at least an advanced hobbyist or seriously interested in growing their skill set.

It is a lovely shot, but very, very saturated/vivid to me as well.

That's what it is then... Ironically, most of my friends photographers (who love to critique images in general and, of course, my images as well) never mentioned any saturation problems. Interesting... I will need to ask them for a "second opinion". Meanwhile, thanks for letting me know. I may simply re-process this one, leaving the saturation out.

My flickr image is not changing though, this is my single most viewed and "faved" image there yet. :)

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it!
