I currently have my site done with wordpress/photocrati but I'd like to make a switch to a different setup, primarily because I've been delivering images via dropbox or physical media and I'd rather set up my site with private client galleries and unlimited file hosting so they could download directly through my site. I have free hosting through a friend at the moment but the server is slow and doesn't have the storage space to do what I'd like.

I see that Photoshelter is the only one of the three that support retina/high res displays and that is important, but it's also $150 more a year.

Thoughts?

I've been very happy with Zenfolio, but I have not compared them with any others.

Zenfolio is great and they have been adding new features regularly.

I haven't compared to the others in about 2 years.

My concern is with the increasing number of high resolution displays, my work will look like crap.

4k displays will just show your image smaller, no? Not like 'crap' I would hope, as then the rest of the internet will look like crap too. If you load high enough res files on zenfolio etc they should show up just fine I'd think?

The problem I've run into with Photocrati, Zenfolio, Smugmug, etc is that the image gets upscaled and pixelated. Logos don't look sharp.

I used to use zenfolio and was always pretty pleased with them, the back end took a little getting used to but the results were always pretty nice. Only stopped using them when I built my own site.

Look into ShootProof (external link) They don't charge a commission - just a subscription with lab fees and credit card fees when you sell. Keep your WordPress site and link to ShootProof (external link) for galleries and sales. You can see how it works on my sites below.

I'm loving everything about ShootProof EXCEPT that I can't customize the template to match my site. I have it paired up with a SquareSpace site and Google Apps for Business.

...all three have trials: I would recommend giving them all a go and seeing which one works best in your workflow. I use Photoshelter and it works perfectly for me: but I'm in the Southern Hemisphere and the other two don't play well with NZ currency which is ultimately why I chose it. There maybe some quirks that make you either love or hate one of the options: giving each a go is the best way to find those quirks out.

I use Smugmug and shootproof together. I like SM for the unlimited hosting and Shootproof for the commission free self fulfillment.

Most posters here mention how much they like their solution. But there is (understandably) nobody who has current site-to-site comparisons. I am wondering if there is any independant side-by-side comparison of these (and other) sites for hosting and fulfillment services. One criteria I am especially interested in is how good their SEO optimization is. Also interested in the display options for full screen users, iPad and Android pad users, phone users, etc. Does anyone know of a direct feature comparison site I could visit??
