I love 10mm on crop bodies and just picked up a 7D II. I considered the canon 10-22 but have been holding out for a long time, hoping and praying that sigma releases a new 10mm prime or 10-something zoom under this new global vision. I assume it would be a contemporary lens?

Anyways, I'm impatient and want something now. But the question is, what lens is that is available for APS-C cameras performs best/sharpest at 10mm, whether it be a zoom or prime?

Thanks in advance!

- Ryan

Quite a limited amount of lenses in that category, but the EF-S 10-18 STM is pretty darn good (especially at the price it sells for)

Money is no concern. I want the best at 10mm. The 10-18mm is a fantastic lens at it's price-point, but certainly not the best. I appreciate your input though. :)

are you stopping it down to f8 or so...if you are, i doubt you'll see much of a difference in any of the 10mm options

Heya,

The EF-S 10-22 is probably it, in terms of non-fisheye stuff.

Alternative, is the Sigma 8-16.

Very best,

According to the lenstip review, the Samyang 10/2.8 is about the sharpest in the center, but the 10-18 wins at the corners. Do you need AF?

As I said, there is an extremely limited selection of lenses at that focal length, and none of them are L lenses or particularly super sharp throughout the frame. As mentioned, some are better at the center and some are better at the corners. Unfortunately there is no REALLY GOOD 10mm lens. There are offerings from Sigma (8-16 and 10-20), Canon EF-S (10-22 and 10-18) as well as Tokina (11-16), but all of them are very similar in sharpness. In fact they are often reviewed together and compared to each other. The general consensus is that the Tokina is best for low light stuff (f/2.8 aperture), while the 10-18 is the "go to" lens if you don't need low light.

As for sharpness, I personally find the 10-22 soft especially at the edges, though many people don't agree. Might be just a bad specimen that I used. However the Image Quality pages at the-digital-picture.com confirm my feelings. The 10-18 is the best in my opinion, at any price point (with AF). Sigma 8-16 is very similar at 10mm but costs much more.

I just researched all the UWA lenses again and my conclusion was optically the 10-18mm canon is the sharpest. The 10-22 is close especially when stopped down or compared in the center and it has a larger aperture but no IS.

the 10-18mm looks worse in the corners here to the 10-22mm
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2 (external link)

and the sigma 10-20f4-5.6 looks pretty much equal to the canon 10-22mm...so i don't see how the 10-18mm is best...

i still think if you're stopping down to f8, you're not going to be able to tell much of a difference among any of them...which is when things like flare, and distortion come into play

The digital picture concluded that the 10-18 had similar corners:

Other websites seems to agree with this. So in sharpness...10-18mm wins by a bit. Like was mentioned though...stopping these lenses down will remove most differences.

part of me wonders if he mixed them up...just looking at the distortion of the two shots, it seems like the more distorted shot should be the 10-18mm to go along with his other test shots in the comparison page

it wouldn't be the first time i found a mistake on his website...

Yes, this surprised me too. He claims in the 10-22mm review that it's "reasonably" sharp corner to corner.

I had them both for a bit and from one to the other there wasn't much difference in IQ, but chose to keep the 10-22mm for that extra stop or two of aperture. It''s a really fun lens.

Doubt it...other websites agree. This includes slrgear and photozone. The 10-18 is just the sharper lens...not amazingly sharper...but sharper.
