I see Skink pinhole kits on ebay, Holga on Amazon and I'm sure there are others too. I'm interested in a precision pinhole rather than drilling a hole in one of my caps. I read a few weeks back that the hole size affects things and then there is the distance from the sensor. Not sure in what case if any a extension tube would be needed or desired for an effect?

Anyone recently play with pinhole lens for their Canon? I did a search and what came up was a few years old. Wanted to see if anyone has some recent experience with what is currently available on the market.

I like the look from what I've seen and that is the draw along with using a lens such as this. Seems shutter duration and ISO are the only variables. Wondering if hand holding is a option or the majority of time it will be on a tripod?

I made my own pinhole. It does show - I get some "dirt" in the photo I have to remove manually; a laser-drilled hole would make clean photos.

Pinhole is not particularly useful on crop cameras - too low resolution (effectively something like 200x300 pixels). It will look a bit better on FF, but I think it will only look nice on large format film cameras.

Distance of the pinhole from the sensor is effectively the focal length of the "lens", so extension tubes will increase the effective focal length (and perhaps decrease resolution).

Thank you very much, that was very helpful and now I have some things to think about.

I use the Holga pinhole lens and can thoroughly recommend it. My first pinhole lens was made by using my finest wire drill on a spare body cap. It was OK but not quite what I wanted so I bought the Holga. The Holga has a much smaller aperture so exposures are typically 15 to 30 seconds so a tripod is a must.
One thing to note is that the Holga pinhole lens does not cover a FF sensor and gives significant vignetting - though this is not always a bad thing (it does cover an APSC sensor though). The solution is simple - just get a set of the cheapest extension tubes you can find! A 13mm tube gives FF coverage with little vignetting but, more importantly, you can use the extension tubes to vary the focal length and hence field of view, also useful with APSC.
Pinhole photography is a great deal of fun and can really expand your creative side.
One point, don't let anyone else use it! I let a friend of mine borrow mine to take an HDR image of some derelict barges. It took a while as it was 7 different exposures. He promptly won an award with the final image! He is NOT borrowing it again............

Thanks! I'll be using it on aps-c. Bought a Lenox Laser pinhole at 0.24mm, similar to the Holga 0.25mm. And I believe the Holga is like the Lenox where the pinhole is to the rear-most of the cap. I can't wait to try it out. Do you have any photo examples?

Here are a couple, as you can see I forgot to bring along my extension tubes to avoid the vignetting! You probably won't get vignetting but the extension tubes are still handy for varying tour focal length. These are unprocessed, just converted to Jpeg and scaled for web so that you can see what is likely to come out of your camera.
