Hi all,
Will the autofocus improvements in the 7D2 allow autofocus with the Canon 100-400mm and a Canon 1.4x extender? Does anyone have experience with this combination?
Thanks.

5.6 x1.4 makes it a F8 lens.
You will have autofocus with the 7D ii

While technically it should work, if the combo is anything like my 5D3 + 100-400L + 1.4x TC, you probably will not be very happy with the results. I prefer to just crop in post processing instead of using a TC with this lens -- I get better image quality and am not forced to shoot at f/8.

I have the Kenko 1.4x TC with my 7D and there is IQ degradation. Unless you are close to your subject so you have it filling a large part of the frame you are probably better off without using the TC. Moving subjects are to keep in focus as the focus gets rather slow. Those travel parallel to the camera can be focused better.

it depends on what extender you use. for instance the canon 1.4X mkII you lose a decent amount of sharpness but ive been told the newer mkIII is greatly improved

My very first shot with the 7D2 was with the 100-400L and EF 1.4x III extender. Focus was on the eye using single-point spot focus. It seemed pretty fast to me, and seems sharp enough for my purposes:

At first, I thought your photo was upside down. Then I realized you're in Australia.

Since the original question has been answered (yes, the 7D2 will AF that combination), I am interested in how people are not getting good results with TCs?

Cropped result with the Kenko 1.4x on the 100-400 on a 1D3:

With the 2x on a Sigma 50-500 OS on a 5D3:

These are not full sized images downsized, these are partial crops, probably 30-50%. I have had very good luck with TCs, you just have to dial them in separately with AFMA.

I think that it part of my issue with the TC. I don't need MFA bare on the 100-400 but it is needed with the Kenko TC. The TC doesn't report so MFA is sketchy to use. Maybe I'll get the canon 1.4XIII this winter.

If I am close I get very good results even with cropping. If I need a strong crop I think that is where I need MFA. If the bird is moving then all bets are off. Maybe the greater sensitivity of the 7D2 will help, too.

Thanks for all the responses. I do a lot of birds in flight, so I'll just have to try it and see how well it works.

I can tell you the mark II makes the kenko 1.4 feel almost invisible compaired to the 7d, I had all kinds of focus issues but they are gone with the 7d mark II, I still prefer not to use it but it works so much better on the 7d2. I do have the canon 1.4 III but can not use it on the 70-300L so I am unsure of its performance but I can tell you it is by far a superior lens paired with canon lenses ment for its use.

Wow, that is strange. Did you try to MFA your lens and TC combo? You should really do that if not. The cameras will register a TC+lens as a different slot than just the lens as long as the TC reports back.

I used a Sigma 500 with a TC on my 7D, and at least static subjects AF'd just fine for me. But I am very diligent about dialing AFMA on everything I have too.

I was using the kenko on a 70-300L , I do think it was the combo of the two, if I took it out to 420mm it would hunt real bad but at 380mm it was just ok. I found I could lock and Len zoom in to get the shot, not the best but the 7D mark II has solved the problem.
