Hello
I want to find a backup camera to my 6D. I do some jobs to a company nearby so I don't want to use my 6D for those missions. This backup camera I want also to use as a 2nd camera in the field. I shoot mostly wildlife, 50/50 birds and animals.

40% to 50% in low light, it depends.

There are two cameras in stock (used) in a store where I usually buy stuffs.

1D MK3 - 700 USD (mint)
7D - 550 USD (mint)

I owned a 7D for many years, I don't photograph in RAW that time, only Jpeg and I wasn't good to reduce noise with the computer that time but now I can and understand these things. I wasn't happy with the ISO that time.

The weight of these cameras are no problems. I want a fast and AF accurate camera with so little noise as possible.

The 7D does have 18MP, so if you reduce it down to 10MP (size of the 1D III) I wonder how the noise would look then?

7D or 70D I like having the 70D because of the video capabilities...

Speaking as a 1D3 user, I would say 1D3. Useable ISO up to 3200, excellent AF, files that are very nice to work with and it can be used as a weapon on a hostage situation.

.....and very good battery life!

i own the 7d along with 1d mk3 and find its auto focus speed and shutter are spot on,and have had no problems with its ISO,but if i can suggest saving up for 5d-3 i think you would be better off in the ISO dept. as i feel the 1d mk3 has some age on it and the newer cameras just do better with ISO range, its just how i feel about it.

Heya,

1D3 easily for wildlife/birds, and wanting relatively clean ISO or at least not distracting ISO at higher levels, while being robust.

But really, what kind of shooting do you need to do for the `missions' you're talking about? Do you need higher resolution? There's more to it than just getting a `beater' camera. Assuming it's paid stuff. If it's free, then whatevs. If it's just taking photos of jobs sites or people at a place, and it's basically pro bono, maybe take a wee EOS-M with whatever lens you want on it, to do that stuff. Cheap, high resolution, great quality and good ISO handling, in a cheap little mirrorless box. Takes all your EF and EF-S lenses with a simple adapter.

Very best,

Hello
The missions are 90% night lift, taking photos of people at the bar and partys. I got a flash so I don't need to push up to the highest ISO levels. I want to have a 2nd body to use to these missions but also to use as a extra camera outside this job. I don't think the EOS-M is the right decision here and I want a camera body that I want and feel that I can use as a extra body for my hobbies :)

Got it, EOS-M definitely isn't suited to that. This is why having information about the goal is critical.

Well, your 6D is actually the ideal camera here for this job. Flash or not.

But frankly, since you're pushing flash, anything will work.

So I would just get whatever camera satisfies your hobby stuff best. I'd go 1D3 still. It can take on the elements, and that's where you seem to go more often (based on looking at your work).

Very best,

Yeah okay, but the only thing I don't like is the 10 mpx, cause I sell many photos in 50x70 photos so 18 mp has it's positive sides too.... hmm this is very hard, 7D also got the video mode

Heya,

Rent a 1D3 (or borrow if you know someone). Take a photo. Have it printed at the largest size you're wanting to be able to do.

Do the same with an 18MP APS-C. Or just compare to your 6D.

One of the nicest large prints I have seen was at a pro photographers shop in Llangollen (Wales) about 4 years ago. It was a monochrome shot of Bantry Bay in Ireland and covered a standard size domestic door - not bad for 6mp!
Since then I don't get hung up on megapixels!

P.S. the 1D3 is better than the 7D in every way except weight, it even likes cheaper memory cards! The fastest are Sandisk Extreme 3 8gb SD cards - even quicker than CF in the 1D3.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
