I've owned my 70D for the better part of a year now and the one feature I've grown to love is the articulating screen. I've owned Canon DSLRs since the XT and I initially purchased the 70D because I wanted a better focusing system when shooting video. Before actually getting the camera, I thought the swivel out screen was more of a gimmick, but now I use it a ton to get angles that would require some serious body movement or blind shooting (even in Live View) with a fixed screen.

I am noticing with Canon's latest upmarket offerings (7D MKII and 6D) this is a feature is not present. I am assuming an articulating screen will be absent on the 5D MKIV as well. Why is this? Is there a disadvantage of having an articulating screen on a pro level body?

Heya,

Good question.

Instead, they keep implementing WiFi. Which I think is great. I use my articulaing swivel LCD's for live view often when I'm landscape shooting or doing family selfies with a timer. I use Live View and my LCD swiveled all weird when doing near vertical Moon shots. Way nicer than having to contort and work upside down.

Maybe it's a structural issue to the bodies. Or a liability for a breaking point. Or something like that.

Very best,

Though I have no way of knowing, it might be related to sealing the camera body against moisture.

I sorta miss it... But given how tightly the 7D2 has been sealed and reinforced I understand why they didn't put it on there. This thing is built to be used on a sideline and survive if someone runs into you. It also would mean a huge layout change to either move or eliminate a lot of the buttons on the left side.

lol

On the bodies without it they can put a row of buttons down the left hand side. I think giving that control up is something they don't want to do.

Laughing again. I could understand hoping they don't put it in all of their FF camera's but hoping they never make any FF model with it seems hilariously small world.

I was directing my comments towsrd the pro lines, which seems the thrust of the OPs full post. When silicon chip processing gets to the point of full frame rebels then fine, whatever. But before that happens wifi and/or bluetooth will turn your phone into an even more useful screen.

Gotta agree with you there. I PREFER a swivel screen, but if you are having 200lb football players crashing into you or having to drop your camera to get out of the way, the fixed screen is the more solid solution. If you have the swivel screen out at that point, it's almost guaranteed to break off

+1
I don't think it would last long on a pro body.

Same here. I will be bummed if the 6D2 and/or 5D4 had an articulated screen.

Pro's use external monitors when shooting video... million times better than a built in articulating screen, not to mention you get other goodies like zebra stripes and focus peaking, real time audio monitoring, custom frame lines, the list goes on and on.

I will admit to missing the touch screen though. They joystick just doesn't do it when picking focus points in video, especially in tracking mode. It would also be super handy for moving through the menu tabs quickly.
