This might sound like spam or an ad, but it's not.

I researched and found a Windows 8.1 tablet at Best Buy for $229. While this post normally should be in the market section, I posted here because I'm sure there are others, like me, who want a tablet that isn't using a mobile operating system.

This thing is real. It's a real windows 8.1 computer in the form of a tablet, and the price is great.

Here is a pic of it:

And since I'm am a subscriber to Adobe Creative Cloud, I downloaded Lightroom (real lightroom, not that mobile junk). It works!

Pros and Cons:

Pros...
It's a real computer. It uses real apps. It's cheap. It's a tablet. It doesn't rely on mobile anything.

Cons...
It's confusing as hell to figure out how to complete normal tasks without a mouse and standard keyboard, but I'll learn. This is only for when I'm away from home and want convenience.

Also, it only has 2gb of ram, a 1.36ghz processor, and a 32gb hard drive. However, even with those limitations it's still a real computer running real software Adobe Lightroom, and Photoshop work. No, I probably can't multitask, but what real processing can I do on an Android or ios device? Not much.

Note: there are better choices out there, but they come at a higher price for more ram and hard drive, along with faster processors. but for $229 it's tough to beat. Same size as the large ipad, but cheaper than the ipad mini. And it comes with Microsoft Office, including free Office 360.

It's a real solution for me.

Hope it helps others.

Interesting.
I am struggling to learn to live with 8.1 just now, on a hybrid laptop/tablet (lenovo Ultrabook Yoga pro 3)

I've done some side by side testing with the touch screen on the Yoga (fantastic screen!) vs. a Tablet (actually a phone/tablet, galaxy Note II) and can say that so far I find 8.1 as a tablet is simply broken.

Some 3rd party apps that run fantastically on the Android platform (an din fact on IOS) are tedious or useless on the touch screen in Win8.1

I'd be amazed if you will be able to get Win8.1 with only the touch screen to be useful with the apps you want it to be, when it falls down so hard with apps that were designed to be touch screen only.

note: I guess I didn't notice there was a bundled keyboard case for twenty more bucks. Sure wish an employee would have known and told me. I'll have to call and get them to add it on.

There is also (not sure where. I forget) a refurbished Dell that has 4gb of ram and a much larger solid state hard drive, along with a faster processor for $349. I think it's at Best Buy, but I'm not sure.

I played with it last night and really enjoyed it. There are definitely drawbacks, but it'll be neat to see what it can do. I love my iPhone and my chromebook, but I also enjoy Windows 8.1 on my desktop computer.

I look forward to the next year of technology.

Oh, and some of the eight inch Windows tablets are unreal. Same specs but in a smaller package.

I was playing around with a lot of tablets last night and there are a lot of options. Win8.1 needs a little getting used too but with 3rd party apps, it makes windows more usable. I believe winstart is a good addition that allows the start menu to be brought back.
