I headed out to my local racetrack yesterday to try out my new 7D mark II.The camera performed very well.

Initial focus acquisition feels snappier than original 7D.New focus system is excellent.Tracks very well.

Overall,very happy with new camera.

Here's some pics from the day.Shot with 7D mark II and EF 70-200mm f2.8 II or EF 300mm f2.8 II w/1.4x extender.

Regards,

Robert

Great shots Robert...and nice to see some horse racing photos....where did you go? Looks like you were able to get quite close to the action.

Would you mind sharing the camera settings please?

Thanks

Gary

Thanks Craign.I would love to check out the Derby one day.Definitely on the bucket list.I did hear somewhere that they restrict the size of the lenses you can use though.I think just on Derby day though.

Thanks gmwinder. These were taken at a nearby racetrack,Golden Gate Fields in the San Francisco bay area.

You can get within 5 feet of the track along the front stretch which is great for photography.

As for the settings,I think I was in Aperture Priority for most of the shots.Usually wide open.Except for #7 which was in Shutter Priority.

It was my first real try with the new camera so I was trying some of the new focus area modes. Most of the time I use single focus point, but I wanted to try out the new AF system.

I think most were in the large zone mode, which seemed to work really well.
I also tried some with all 65 AF points.Which also worked pretty well, but focused where I didn't want it to a couple of times. The horses are all similar color though,so maybe that was throwing the AF system off.Probably not the best situation for that mode.I'll have to play around with it more to make a judgement on that.

Some more of the settings were AF case #1,Focus priority on both 1st and 2nd frames.I'm sure there other settings I can't really remember.I think all the exif data is intact though. You can check the images on flickr for full exif info.

Churchill Downs banned cameras with interchangeable lenses (not just a 6 inch lens size restriction) after the Boston Marathon bombing. I contacted some people I know at Churchill and got the corporate excuse which would make for good organic fertilizer.

I took my P and S like a good boy. I got madder my the minute as fans around us had big whites plus extra lenses. There had been no effort by the gate security to limit cameras. Last year, I took my gripped 50D with the 24-105 lens and my sister took her SL1 and Tamron 18-270 lens. We did not try to hide them and walked right in with no questions.

Our seats are on the rail at the finish line, so having a good camera is rather important.

BTW: Seats go on sale Tuesday (Nov 11) morning for people that registered earlier this year. Churchill is selling many seats of varying quality every year. Check their website for more information. The Derby is a really great event and the day is full of non stop photo ops.

The actual KY Derby race is tough as the sun is below the grandstands, leaving the track in the shadows and a bright background.
