Manged to find a cooperative Mallard while out and about with the new 7D MkII this afternoon and figured I'd grab some shots at the higher ISOs to see how they'd process out. All shot RAW, converted to TIFF via DPP 4 w/ all noise reduction turned off, imported into LR for final processing and output. Original RAWs can be provided if anyone wants to look at them themselves.

7D MkII, 100-400 @ 400mm:

I'm not going to worry too much about what ISO I need anymore at this point :p

6400 looks spotless, Eric! Looks like we have a winner here with the Mk II. Decisions, decisions... I really wanted the Canon 8-15mm fisheye zoom as my next purchase, but the 7DII is giving me pause!

More proof that ISO and the 7Dii is a non-issue. Snydremark thanks for the effort.

Looks like there is finally a crop sensor that can come close to the 6D for high ISO noise... ;)

^I've got both and I wouldn't go that far :) but agree the 7Dii (for higher ISOs) does a wonderful job....the birders and wildlife photographers have to be very pleased.

Yeah, I'm **really** happy with this thing, so far. I went to a seminar with Canon's West Coast product rep yesterday, and he said that while this thing (obviously) won't touch a 1Dx in noise control, that several of his pro clients were snapping it up as a backup body for their 1Dx and a few had noted that they felt it put significant pressure on the 6D as well.

Lovely shots Eric.

Can you provide more info on your processing?

1. Did you leave the DPP NR defaults as they were or zero them,. dId you turn off the DPP sharpening?

2. What did you do in LR?

Thanks Lester!

In DPP, I turned all of the NR to zero before converting to TIFF
In LR, I did a little bit of NR and sharpening for my own tastes, but could realistically left those alone, too. I can provide the converted TIFF and/or original RAW files if you want to take a look at them yourself.

Great stuff Eric, It does show that with good exposure the 7D mark II is an outstanding camera. I wouldn't say you can just let it go.... but we are so much better off now. I hear ya on the NR, for the most part I have left it at zero and that is like wow. I find myself getting past the wow factor and now find myself saying "ok now lets see what else we can find with this camera" but man ...best money I have spent to move forward in my photography ....Ever.

Great work Eric. I was in Lynwood convention center and attended the class about 7d2 and I am really impressed with all the features although the rep did not discuss ISO but he said there are new features that this body have that are not in 1dx or other higher end bodies. I am getting mine next year after our trip overseas.

I would like to look at the TIFF and raws if I may.

My quandary is comparing the 7DI and II raws at Image Resource for ISO 800/1600 the 7D looks better to me by about 2/3 stop. Yet everyone else finds the 7DII better, so I must be doing some thing wrong.

If you could record your Lightroom settings that would help a lot too.
