it was a tragedy - i left it in my bag after i was done covering an event and went out for a few drinks. came back and it was gone...after just a month with it, i felt really devastated.

Its been 2 weeks+. So i'm now considering getiing another 6D, but some have told me to wait for the mk ii instead. I always intended for the full frame to be an upgrade for my events photography - still using my 650D now, not that its a bad cam. Just that the higher iso really comes into handy for ambient indoor shots without flash.

what do you guys think?

Dont wait. It could be years before a 6D2 comes out (look how long it took for the 7D2). Get a used 6D or 5D3.

they are not going to replace the 6d any time soon; I would expect a 3+ year cycle based on the 1d/5d/7d cycles

Sorry about that, some people have no class, hopefully you have the serial # and reported it to your local police and Canon.

Consider insurance, especially if this is your business. And never leave it unattended.

This!

I almost kicked myself just yesterday when I went into a store and returned to the truck to notice that I'd left my entire bag in plain sight. My son was with me and I suppose distracted me. About $5k worth of gear in that bag.

I'm so very sorry to hear that.

First get a hard case and some type of lock that will let you secure it somewhere when shooting. And if storing or in your car, always put it in the trunk.

If you need/want another 6D, there's no reason to wait. But why not get a flash? You'll get better pictures and focus assist. It'll make your 650D perform like a full frame camera.

Insurance is definitely worth it, if only for the peace of mind.

I got a little pissed at a co-worker the other day because I was doing the annual team portraits for the kids in our gym and she was adamant about wanting me to leave my entire studio setup there for the night (there are 2 other business' attached to our gym who have access to it, I don't know most of the people who work for them). There wasn't a chance I was going to leave that stuff there...

Maybe for the peace of mind, but insurance is not worth it financially if you can cover the loss yourself. Insurance companies pay their help and make a profit, and these funds comes from your premiums.

So only insure what you can't reasonably deal with yourself if there is a loss.

Sorry to hear it all and been there, done that...

When you get used to good stuff, its really hard to go back to something of lower quality and 6D is really here to prove the point.

When introduced, 6D was light years ahead of its cousins. Truly what else (In usefulness name sake) can Canon add to it, even if Mk II was to show up today afternoon except marketing face lift? So I don't really think you should go for anything different specially lower end cameras or wait, specially if 6D is in any way connected to your generation of income.

Price of 6D has dropped significantly these days and for the first time I am seeing new ones on sale for less that $1399. Go for another one. The moment new one showed up on the shelf, sell this one for whatever you get and move from there. Learn from you experience and it could be a lot more costly, so might have even saved big time, at the end.

A few things I'd like to see in the 6DII, if it ever gets made:

  • The 65 cross-type AF points that the 7DII has.
  • An additional SD card slot.

That is very true. My policy is so inexpensive and covers loss, theft, or accidental damage. For me it is worth the cost of the insurance to have it replaced if something were to happen to it - even if I could re-buy the equipment again it would pull funds from places I wouldn't want to pull them from at this point.

So...a 5D mk IV?

Canon would probably never give the 6D those features as it would cannibalize the 5D and 1D market to much. The 6D will always be a few steps behind in the AF/FPS department from the higher end XD cameras as Canon is well aware that people are willing to pay a lot of money for those features. The 6D has a less advanced (other than center point sensitivity) AF system than even the 70D. I would like them to punch it up to a better system, but I don't think you are going see the 60+ all cross type reticular AF sensor in there soon. (could be wrong...and it would be awesome...)

At a whopping $60 a year for around $3000 worth of protection, I say it's a pretty solid deal ;)
