Hi Guys

I am planning my vacations for next year, and one of my options is iceland in february. I definitely want to see some auroras for photographing nightskyes etc.

Has someone been there in february? How good is the chance to capture some auroras?

Thanks in advance!

I've been twice - The first time was over Xmas and it was cold and bright with everything covered in snow and nice clear skies. Excellent.

The second trip was in February. It was warm wet and 100% cloud cover all the time we were there.

The weather is totally random. You may have clear skies, you may have cloud. Most likely is a mixture - so keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to take a trip on any night where it looks possible.

One thing that is for sure - the chances of seeing the aurora in Iceland in February is much, much higher if you go there.

I went at the end of January - you're in season in February but its down to the solar activity and weather as to whether you see them ,weather changes in a heartbeat - Hire a car and just get out , Its superb driving in Iceland , dont rely on Aurora Tours , even a faint glimse of green will be considered a suceess by these companies.

I was there in February of 2014. I was able to shoot NL 3 nights in a row. The weather is very unpredictable and you can get totally covered sky for several days in a row. This kills your chances of sunrise / sunset and NL.

Good luck with your trip and try to follow the weather.

I went to Iceland last January. Awesome place!
for Northern lights I did take a tour and I will say it was well run, fun tour and I have nothing bad to say about. However, it is true even the faintest green is seeing them. In fact, I couldn't even really see it with the naked eye, but the camera picked it up. so I was able to get some shots. The other point is their objective is to see them and in our case we were in a big empty field (read no foreground) not too far from the city (read light pollution to deal with) so while I have some pictures they are not catered to a photographer (unless you find one that is)! I did take a picture that night of an abandon house in which I was able to over lay the lights to give me something but like I said not wow.
If you can read up and plan and get your own car, you will have a better shot to what you want.

Thanks, Paul
