Value of 17/40 for full frame

Hi all.

I am seriously thinking to invest more into lenses, and i have considered the 17-40 L to fit on a 10D since the 1.6 factor provides a usefull and usable focal range (27-64mm equivalent)

However, i have never used a 35 mm camera (i have started with the D30) so i was wondering what would be the value of such a lens if i switch for a future canon body which will have a full frame sensor? 1.6 * (17-40) seems to be a usefull focal range, but what about a real 17-40 mm (especially 17 mm)?

Another solution would be the 28-70L but in this case the problem is the opposite and the minimum focale of 45 mm would limit the wide angles on the 10 D (i think in my case, i would really miss the wide angles).

Any thoughts that could help? (excuse the poor english)

The lens is not developed for the 10D, so it is fine on an 35mm film camera. Well it was introduced as a standard zoom on the 10D, but as i said, it will give you a nice quality @ 17mm on full frame.

It's an excellent standard zoom on my D60 and a fabulous wide zoom on on my EOS 1N. Go for it

thank you, for your answer. I knew the 17-40 mm was not design for Dslr specially. I just wondered what was the use of having a "real" 17 mm focal.

It looks to me like a fisheye without the distortion and even if i like the perspective provided by the wide angle, i am not sure about the 17 mm.

How many of you use such wide angle on normal camera? Is there anyone using this lens with the 1Ds for instance?

It seems to me that the low price of the 17-40 come in part from the fact that its focal range is not attracting for argentic SLRs or full frame Dslr. I would be sad paying 800$ or 600£ for a lens that will become more of a burden when (if i do one day) switch to a full frame SLR.

That focal length on a film camera is awesome! I love it when I borrow the one from work to use on my EOS1n. It isn't really wide enough for me for the digital though. A 15mm is a high as I want - so now to find the right wide lens for the 10D.

Here is an image I shot on Fuji Reala with an Elan 7e and the EF 17-40 f4L. The image has been cropped slightly to correct a tilted horizon. Light fall off was visible at the corners with my 77mm C-Pl filter attached - It was small enough to be corrected in the crop.

I have several images in my gallery that were taken with the 10D and EF 17-40 f/4L. Below is the only sample I have from film at the moment.

thank you bluebomberx for this picture. nice one indeed, and it gives me a good idea of the kind of perspective this lens provides on a 35 mm.

i really think i will go for it!! even if its a little expensive here in england.
