I spent a good part of today out with this lens, at the beach the sun came through for a short while. Nothing spectacular, but wow, this is a really big step up over the VI.

My ever evolving review is here;

Well I guess thats all I got is time. I'm off work until Feb. I broke my leg and arm in Aug. We have a Waterfowl reserve not to far from the house I'll see if I can't get some duck pics.

Some were curious earlier about the lens size, at 400mm.

Here's a comparison with a 70-300L, at 300.

Both this and TDP crops are not showing much improvement @ 400mm over the old one. The 100, 200, and 300mm shots are a good deal better but not 400mm. Any owners of both that can confirm or deny that on their copies?

I can easily see a difference at 400.

Original 100-400:

New 100-400 II:

And a gif of the two:

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

^Great comparison! 100-400L II is amazingly sharp.

Now how am I going to rationalize this purchase :(
I think in my situation the 70-300 might compute.

I was thinking about getting the Sigma 150-600 but now that people are talking about the new 100-400 being so fast in AF and sharp, I'm wondering if I should buy the Canon and lose the extra 200mm?

Merlin

With a 1.4 extender attached it becomes a 560 f8 lens.

Oh I know that but the 1.4 is $500 and the 100-400 will already cost me $2700 taxes in. But I'm thinking I'll go Canon because I trust Canon quality.
