I was going through several threads and read many comments where a particular lens has a character that people can always recognize. I was not 100% convinced:-)

Just a little test....

Which lens did I use to produce this picture? I chose this picture because it a better material for analysis. My theory - it is all guessing, almost impossible to say which tell which lens was it.

I would say this was shot with a 35 or 50mm lens somewhere around f/2.

But i think its a 50mm lens

Even if it is 50 mm, which one is this? Sigma, Canon, Zeiss, etc? We debate so much about a unique character......so is it a 100 USD nifty fifty or it is a Zeiss? Maybe Sigma? Maybe it is not 50 mm?

It certainly isnt a cheap lens. I'd say either a canon 50L or a sigma 50 1.4

How can you tell it is not cheap?

I'm leaning more towards 35... I say 35L, wide open.

I will wait for more options.....but what interests me is the reasoning.....so when you guys give your options, can you explain why you think so? Thanks.

Really?

To me, this doesn't exhibit the rendering that's possible with some Zeiss or (to a lesser extent) Sigma Art lenses. At the same time, that doesn't rule out those manufacturers as a possibility - that a lens has a potential for certain performance in no way guarantees that you're going to squeeze that potential out of it every time.

Frankly, this reeks of insecurity. If you truly don't believe the claims of others, you wouldn't feel compelled to challenge them - you'd ignore and move on by happily shooting with whatever you're happy with.

Its hard to tell that its sharp, but to me it looks sharp. But the point which tells me that this is not a cheapo lens is the way the bokeh renders. It is smooth and doesnt make impression of a disturbed background

Well....I do not even have gear listed in my signature....so I do not really pay too much attention to claims:-) I am simply curious - in real life, looking at a picture....can people recognize the mystical character that they are constantly referring too.

But isnt our goal to make good images with a lens and not to judge other images?
I mean youre totally right that it may not be obvious. But i think the key by telling this lens renders more smoothly etc is that it is maybe easier to create a dreamy look with some lenses, as an example

The bokeh isn't completely smooth - there's a bit of busy-ness to it, especially evident in the brighter edges of the OOF highlights in the upper right (you can also see some doubling in the OOF windows in the upper left). I wouldn't expect that this is a fast 50mm wide open, but I wouldn't rule out a fast 35.

But that even happens with my 50L when stopped down a bit and this is the smoothest rendering lens ive ever used. But its about the way the background gets less contrast, microdetail which is what i think why it looks so smooth.
