Well....I do not even have gear listed in my signature....so I do not really pay too much attention to claims:-) I am simply curious - in real life, looking at a picture....can people recognize the mystical character that they are constantly referring too.

Not having your gear listed in your sig doesn't mean anything. Actions mean something, and (again), this strikes me as the action of someone that's insecure in their gear choice, for whatever reason.

Frankly, I'm a firm believer that certain lenses do sometimes exhibit certain characteristics that set them apart from other lenses. That said, no lenses are a magic bullet and they still require skillful use to get that potential out of them. Further, I'll one-up you by stating that I'm NOT skeptical about any 100% claims - I'm absolutely certain that any 100% claims are wrong. It is that very certainly that means that I don't feel the need to call anybody out on it - I can happily move on.

Sorry, but this is not my point:-) And by the way, I did not yet see a correct answer....

But that even happens with my 50L when stopped down a bit and this is the smoothest rendering lens ive ever used. But its about the way the background gets less contrast, microdetail which is what i think why it looks so smooth.

Which is why I said that I didn't believe that it was a fast 50 wide open. There isn't much that I wouldn't rule out between 35-50mm (I don't think that the photo shows a terrible amount of unique optical character), but it doesn't strike me as a 50L or 50A wide open. Could it be one of those stopped down? Sure, but there's an awful lot of other lenses that it could be, to me. Hell, it's just as likely that it's a standard zoom, to me.

Of course it's not your point - I'm saying that you're not self-aware enough to recognize your own motivations.

As far as a correct answer, I'll say again - I agree with you that it's not possible to identify any lens 100% of the time, so the correct answer is neither here nor there for me.

If I'm being asked to evaluate an image for optical characteristics, I'll simply say that this image isn't compelling to me in that regard (it is a nice photo, though), so I wouldn't even bother checking the EXIF or asking about the lens used if this were a typical image sharing thread.

Thank you - I am aware and just don't care enough to bother with it or my sig or my linked and outdated gear list.
