Same as with this picture - no way people will be able to tell which of the 35 mm is this: Zeiss, Sigma, Canon, etc

QUOTED IMAGE

Is this from the Zeiss as well? I think the color rendering is very different from my Canon lenses (they are more dull) and my Sigma (which emphasises primary colors it seems). This lens appears to render very beautiful darker colors.

Hey William, I really-really want to tell you that you are a nice guy but you are wrong:-) It has nothing to do with me, I honestly tell you. I am not attached to any lens nor I am trying to convince myself or anybody. This post was inspired not by Zeiss/Leica/Whatever discussion....it was inspired by 700-200 II vs 135 L vs 85L. I realized that when a good photograph is produced, people will never know, never care what was the lens used. Nobody will ever be able to tell what was the lens used, as it was in this case. So you have to believe me, there is no hidden agenda:-)

Ha ha - I figured as much. You *so* want to love Zeiss/Leica/whomever, and it bugs you to no end that you don't see anything special in them. I'm sure that, over the course of a number of similarly-themed threads (in which you're railed against the notion of lenses with a certain look), others have shown you numerous examples of photos that they think exhibit qualities that are unique or semi-unique; I'm sure that, looking at those photos, you just didn't see what the fuss was about. You know what? That's okay. You don't need to keep doing stuff like this to convince yourself - just move on and be confident that you're not missing out on something... because you're not missing out on anything.

Nope, this is from Sigma Art. in case of 35 mm - they are all good! Zeiss, Canon, Sigma. It is simply a matter of AF vs MF, nothing more. You see it yourself, it is impossible to distinguish.

When people know what was the lens that they used, they try to see something special in the way the photo looks and when people do not know and just look at the photo, they can never tell.

Thank you and I do agree with you. In real world, people will never be able to tell. When we only see photographs, we stop thinking gear and this is how it should be. It is about the idea, the moment, the story and many lenses can do the job equally well. There is no mysterious look or anything like that. Go to the Leica forum and browse through the 1000 pages of pictures and you will think that most of them are taken with an entry level DSLR. Some are exceptional, but this is not because of the gear.

In case of these two shots I used....they are really average, just a lens test....nothing more:-)

Interesting, while I do agree with you that you can obtain similar results with any lens, when I see great photographs like the 2 you've posted in this thread, I immediately attribute it more to the skill of the photo-taker. I don't automatically say, "wow, that Zeiss glass is fantastic!."

But like i said, you can tell very fast if it was a 100$ lens or a 1000/2000$ lens...

And doesnt someone deserve good quality when spending 2k for a lens?

Maybe you cant find a difference between shots done with 135L, 70-200L or 85L. But you are comparing the top lenses from canon with each other. The same as comparing Sigma 35 art with 35L and zeiss 35..

But im questioning what is the reason youre doing this? Convince others that it doesnt matter so much? I mean, you clearly got skills, checked out your website and you are a very good potographer. So why do you mind with all this sh**?

I could tell that was the Sigma art tbh after owning it.

Didn't get the first one though but I've never owned the lens.

I believe that you believe that there's no hidden agenda, but the lengths to which you go, in an effort to prove others wrong, speaks otherwise - when others talk about this look or that look, you feel like you're on the outside looking in, because you don't see it. Rather than be happy on the outside (or confident with the knowledge that this is no inside), though, you want to tear down the walls. You do great work and no lens "look" is going to make or break it, so just put it behind you.

But otherwise we would not have such a wonderful and to and extend philosophical conversation:-)

Perish the thought that we should create, instead. :p
