Question to the group – I understand there are plenty of variables in play but let’s exclude the difference in price – which lens would you select and why – Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS II vs. Sigma 120-300 2.8 DG OS HSM.

The Canon - it's a lot lighter, longer and I don't need F2.8 for outdoor sports

Sigma 120-300 for the exact reason SDK doesn't need it. I need 2.8 for outdoor sports.

Heya,

120-300 F2.8, without question for me. F2.8 at 300mm, and takes a TC to be a 420mm at F4, or 600mm at F5.6. The Canon simply cannot do this and still function well, while the Sigma can. The Sigma is just a versatile telephoto zoom. Great for low light action. Yet can become a 600mm with acceptable aperture still, for things that are a little more stationary.

Very best,

They both exist in the real world. Just can't get get hands on the one just yet.

I think the comparison would more be based around weight, max aperture and focal length though.

Personally if you need f2.8 you can't substitute f5.6 lens for it.

Ed, I wouldn't count on that. That's the nice thing about the Sigma Global Vision line. With the USB dock, lens firmware can be updated to address any future compatibility issues.

Hi Ed,

It would be useful and community-friendly if you elaborated on this. Are you speculating or hoping or basing this on some sort of actual evidence/data/information/insight or is this just a random collection of words? In what way do you think will not work? The mount will change? The electronics will change? The firmware will not communicate? The physics of light will change? I do not think there is any reasonable way I can see a Sigma lens with an EF mount (and an USB dock) not working on a Canon camera that the new EF 100-400 will also work on. This strikes me as very illogical. From your other posts, you do not seem to be an illogical person, so I am genuinely curious as to what are the ways and mechanisms you see this happening, or otherwise why you feel this is the case. I am assuming that we are not dealing with a mindless third-party lens hate/Canon "fan-boyism" here, of course.
