I've been thinking of getting one of these USB2 harddrives instead of getting more flash cards, this one looks particularly interesting.

Anyone use one of these specificly?

Hi,

To be totally honest I would opt for a XsDrive from Vosonic. They are alot cheaper but don't have a display. Normally I would never use the display it's a device to store images for when I get home, I audition them in the camera if needed.

Greetings,
Frank

The XsDrives look like they have to have an external AC power source...but they are cheeper....I think (havn't tried to convert to US dollars and figure out shipping).

I have one of the XSDrives, and generally I am very pleased with it, apart from:

1) Not a brilliant battery life
I reckon I can only get about 3 full downloads of my 1Gb Microdrive - never neede more than 2 downloads to be honest, but I've not taken it away on holiday yet .... ;-)a

2) Very *very* slow downloading the files from the Microdrive. No speed trials yet, but I reckon about 20 mins for a 500Mb download I did last weekend ..... yawn!

I understood, and my experience with "X drive II" supports, that it reads 512Mb CF in about 12 minutes. Never fully tested battery life in terms of how much it achieves before dying. Specs talk of it having just over an hour of power.

But have downloaded 1.5 Gb and the "battery life indicator" on X drive has only dropped by one of the four "segments".

Also if you are taking it on holiday, will you not have the opportunity to recharge it every evening?

Just my 2 cents worth.

To be honest, these are just "my feelings" with the drive and are not scientific fact! ;-)a

If I get chance over the weekend, I'll have a bit of a measured test with it and see.

Mind you, the 600+ photos I took at the Royal International Air Tattoo last weekend might slow me down a bit!!!
