That would have made the lens very long and made storage more difficult.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Really? the compactness of it is one of its main attractions to me. I have a monster walk-around already, I don't want two :)

The video was better than I expected. At first I thought it would just be a series of stills.

DPReview has incorrectly implied that the new 100-400 is less prone to dust because it is not push-pull. It still extends when zooming: http://www.dpreview.com …_medium=text&ref=mainmenu (external link)

the move to a rotating zoom design should resolve problems associated with dust being sucked in during operation

The new lens hood with CPL filter cut-out is a nice touch... I wonder if it will fit the old 100-400 or the 70-200 2.8 ?

Pity it is not a slide (Trombone) zoom!
That twisting Zoom ring is really going slow things up. The one thing I loved about my "Dust Pump" was the ability to acquire the subject at shorter focal lengths and then instantly zoom in to get the shot without disturbing my view. That is simply not going to happen with this lens - pity as I am sure the optics are much better but it will loose much of it's versatility. Shame because I was looking forward to this lens but, to me, it loses out on one of the main advantages of a zoom lens - namely very fast acquisition of a subject and then zooming in to get the shot. This is probably why I almost never use my 70-200 F2.8 L IS - it is just too slow and awkward to re-compose instantly.
Good thing I am happy with my long Primes!
P.S. my "Dust Pump" didn't pump dust!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I have the version 1 and do very well with it.
I like the push pull but won't pass judgement on a twist zoom.

There is some serious competition for this lens from Sigma and Tamron.
We'll see how good it is when people get their hands on it.
I bet it's very good.

Looks really great to me! :D

I hope, like the pinch len cap design shift, that Canon starts making new lens hoods as an available upgrade for existing lenses as well. I love the access door for CPL usage. It's one of those, "Why wasn't this conceived of years ago head-slapper innovations. Love it. Yep, I think I'll have to get one of those lens hoods (they're only $2199 and the hood comes with a free EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM ;) ).

Wow, I'm not buying this lens anytime soon, but going to agree with everyone who has spoken on the subject already, that CPL cutout on the lens hood is pretty sweet. Wondering if anyone would tote this around just for a hiking/landscape lens, haha.
