Hey guys. I have a 6D and wanted to ask you what might be the best/cheapest option to bring my camera to exposures of 30+ seconds?

Bulb and holding the shutter for free is not an option :P

Locking shutter release and a stopwatch? What kind of solution are you looking for?

Heya,

Cheapest way is to set it to BULB and just count. But the problem is, touching the camera to end the exposure will shake it no matter how delicate you are. So obviously, as you stated, this is not an option.

So the cheap option that works well, is an inexpensive third party intervalometer and a set of AAA batteries. (external link)

Or, cheaper, is that you have a 6D with WiFi. You can also use an app to control this from your cellphone.

And there's also Magic Lantern that can be set in camera.

Very best,

Maybe the canon RC-6 or a clone will do? $10 - $20

I purchased this a while ago. No problems. Best $10.00 I spent.

Does the neewer release have a locking mechanism so i can make 2 minutes exposures, as example, without having to press it the whole time?

I think I paid 6 bucks shipped form Amazon for a cheap corded remote shutter release a couple of years ago. Works great and dose the job just fine for me, more money for glass or a good tripod and head that way.

I also just use a cheap third party corded release with a single button and slide-lock on my 5DIII. Before that I used one with my 450D. Works perfectly every time for under $10.

Better,

It's programmable. You set it to delay, interval, how long, how many.

I like to use a 10 second delay before a sequence starts, so I can start it up, set it down, and then it's a few moments later before it begins, but without me touching something to avoid shake and stuff. Then it starts its programmed sequence, of however many shots I told it to do, for how long each one I wanted it to be, with as much delay between each shot as I tell it to.

I do this with night sky long exposure, where I do 4+ minute exposures on a tracker.

It's easy to use, you don't have to hold it or touch it once you program it.

Very best,

I just found a new Android app Slingshot DSLR for the 6D, well worth the $9.99. I tried DSLR controller and Canon EOS Remote, compared to slingshot they stink. I was having multiple WIFI connection problems. Slingshot connects every time with no delay. I am going to try it the next time I am shooting the stars. I am even thinking of using it instead of my intervalometer/remote release.

You won't notice any difference between a 30 second exposure and a 25 second exposure. Just sayin'.

A wired shutter release is the cheapest and easiest method. Most you can lock during exposure. Cheap as chips.
