I don't know the IS version, but isn't this "the IS-version is sharper" just BS (coming from IS-owners).
Optically both versions are the same

Edit: must have trusted the good Ken Rockwell's word too much

More glass elements in IS-version

I stand corrected

I am considering the non-IS version of this lens. I already have the Sigma OS version, so f/2.8 and stabilization is covered. I just need something smaller/lighter/cheaper for when I don't need f/2.8 or IS (OS, VC, XYZ, whatever). The only real alternative is the 200 2.8L II. Still thinking....

Maybe your reply is BS, considering you don't know the IS version?

Comparison (external link).

Review (external link).

This lens is extremely sharp wide open and from corner to corner even on a full frame body. There is little improvement when stopping down - the f/4 IS starts out sharp wide open. Impressive performance.

The non-IS 70-200 f/4 is similarly sharp in the center over the mid and long portion of the focal length range, but the f/4 IS is sharper in the center through 85mm or so and is noticeably sharper in the corners over most of the focal length range. These two lenses are most similar at 200mm. These differences are reduced as the subject distance is increased (the non-IS lens performs more similarly to the IS lens). The f/4 IS and f/2.8 IS 70-200mm L lenses are similarly sharp at identical aperture and focal length settings.

I've been looking at this lens for months. While both lenses would be a pleasure to own I'm sure, it's been commonly reported that the newer lens is sharper under several scenarios. There are additional benefits as well, learned from various reviews. Here's another (external link).

I agree with the advice of many others in this thread, it's worth it to make the stretch for IS, particularly for telephoto zooms.
