Thanks John. I did jump on the Feisol ct 3342 in the classifieds for $280. I also bought the K40x on amazon so if I feel it is too heavy or big, I can return it. It should be here tomorrow (ordered yesterday -Prime account.)

I measured my Manfrotto without the center column raised and it was the same size as the Feisol so I jumped on it. I am all about saving a hundred dollars!

Thanks to everyone for helping with my decision. Cant wait to take it shooting!

Right on Tom. I feel that I made a good decision. It never works out this way for me. Whenever I decide on a product, I never see it for sale used in the classifieds. But after I buy, they become available one after another.
I also noticed that Feisol offers a center column for around $40.

is the 3342 you got the rapid (anti rotation version)? If not that was not much of a deal. but if it is seem's like a great deal good luck with purchase.

You may want to talk to Carter, at the Camera Cottage, in Shepherd, Mt. Carter is the go to guy for tripods. He carries a large amount of great new tripods, and even better, he has lightly used tripods. His store is just outside of Yellowstone, he rents equipment to photographers and sells the rental gear. He also takes people into the Park for photographic safaris. He will give advice, and make a great tripod just for you. cameracottage.com

My K40X arrived yesterday. This thing is massive! I will wait till the tripod arrives and see how it mounts up...

That looks like the same as my friends - I will be syrprised if you are not very happy with it.
I did warn you hat the K40X was a bit of a monster! It's a fine head but it is not exactly small and light - still there is no harm in a bit of overkill when it comes to support!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
