so im making the jump to new 7Dii from my old 40D. since i never shot video on it and it doesnt do a burst of 10 raw like the 7D, i never really payed too much attention to the cards. i currently use SanDisk extreme III compact flash cards with 30mb/s. im pretty sure im gonna need new cards to the shoot hd video, i just dont know which ones to chase down.

should i use compact flash or SD cards?

Believe it or not, it's not the video that you need a faster card for, it's the photos. Your existing card is fast enough to record video without dropping any frames. If you want the absolute fastest CF card out there, I would recommend looking at the Lexar Professional 1066x Compact Flash cards. They should run you about $60-$75 for a 32 GB version, but if you hold out for Black Friday or any Christmas sales, you'll probably get one for $10-$20 less.

As for Compact Flash or SD cards, you really should have both to get the most out of your camera. However, if you can only choose one, then the CF card is the one to get. The 7D writes to the CF card a lot faster then it does to the SD card.

Cheers,
Bryan

Someone did a buffer fill and clear on the 7D2 and got better results with the SanDisk Extreme Pro 160mb/sec CF cards than the Lexar 1066x, so those are another option too.

I'm getting really good results w/ two Transcend UDMA 7 [1000x] cards for mine. 35-45 RAW to full buffer and @4s to clear a full buffer.

Sell your old CF cards and get Lexar 1066x cards. I am doing this right now as I expect the changeover to CFast to come within 5 years. Last thing you want is to still have 10yo cards (by then) that no one will want to buy and will end up being buried in a drawer to be found a decade later to amaze the one who found it that "they made memory cards these small before".

All I need to do now is sell my one 2GB & four 16GB cards. I am currently working with one 64GB card per body.

Another 64GB 1066X card user in my new 7D2 - I swiped the one that was in my 1Ds3! For SD I am using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB 95MS/s that also works fine in my 1Ds3 but am looking into getting something larger than 32 GB soon but am not sure exactly what. I have mainly used SD cards for overflow but that may change with the 7D2.
