I (actually wife) signed for a UPS box with a lens.
It is still sealed and I have taken photos. The box has rather significant tear/impact evidence that was not noticed when picking up the parcel from the UPS office.

Should I just open it and hope for the best? Drive back to the UPS office and discuss the issue with them? Return to UPS and open in front of them? other?
I could open with phone video documenting.

I'd open it up and see what's inside. Looking at the tape on the outside, it may have looked like that when the seller sent it, or was repaired during the transit. You have pictures showing the damage to the packaging.

Did you get shipping insurance? Is the purchase from a well known company with a customer support team, or from an individual you don't know?

Seems a little funny that there is a lot of packing tape where the damage is. Call BH and see how to proceed. I would guess the outside of the lens will be fine. Internal damage such as decentering would be more of a concern for me.

Thanks for the replies. We went back to UPS, but they told us since it was signed for, there is nothing they are responsible for without claim forms, etc. No surprise there.
I sent B&H an email to see what to do. The parcel is still unopened, etc.

My experience with UPS is you are SOL as far as any liability or compensation. I would expect B&H to stand behind their product and packaging.

I like your username by the way.

Always try and inspect, else refuse the shipment. UPS I believe uses a third party for insurance.

I would open it and test it out, adorama sometimes sends me stuff in just a bubble mailer and everything has worked! They even sent me a camera that way once, didn't sweat it at all.

I'm dying to know- how did it turn out? What did B&H advise? Was there a pile of glass and shards of metal rolling about inside?
