Dust and such can obscure the AF sensor just as it can the main sensor...just you have no way of knowing if it is there!!

It would be great if the camera could detect that you have something interfering with the AF sensor so you could shoot some air down there and hopefully get it loose.

Article on the assembly of Canon EOS Cameras. Even though some of the camera assembly is done in what looks like a class 100K cleanroom. The camera is still handled out side of the environment. Plenty of time for particles to get embedded. The work flow chart presented, if correct, shouldn't allow errors to pass through or perhaps is not used or not adequate for the 7D2 or the 7D2 is not assembled here.

You still open the camera. To put on lenses. Dust gets in and can settle on the second mirror or the surface of the AF sensor array.

I'll have to check it again, but I don't know if dust is obscuring it.

Yeah, I went over there on Sunday Peter.
I sorta did some google maps investigating to try and figure out exactly where Greg was. Or the general spot.

I walked around almost that entire area, for an hour or so. I didn't really see anyone else.
I saw a Kestrel though and a ton of chickadees/robins/juncos. Also an Eagle and Great Blue Heron way off.

I was about to check the parking lot area once more, then go. It was very nice on sunday, warm and sunny.
I decided to take a certain path back to the parking lot, and I looked to my right, and there was Greg and Aaron and like 4 other guys, standing in water, watching the owl.

The owl took off like 4 different times, I luckily found it the second time, but everyone else was too far away to yell/get their attention.
They eventually found me and one other guy again, after 10 min. or so.

We were able to get some shots from about 15-20ft away. That is a cute little owl.
A hummingbird actually came up and hovered next to it a couple times, almost to say, Hi, lol.

So the last game produced much better images but that was day time and sunny. So, it'll get the real test and it's primary purchase reason tonight for high school soccer. Our stadium lights are very good for high school. (Apparently ESPN raved about them when the broadcast a f-ball game a few years ago, that they didn't need all the back ups they brought...) Still will be at ISO 3200 - 6400 with the 70-200 (may throw on the 1.4x but that will definately have me at 6400.

Southlake Carroll (#19 in country) vs. Coppell (#3 country) Excellent game ended 0-0.
7d2 w/ 70-200 ISO6400 f 3.2 1/1000. Shot in raw, converted to jpeg then processed in LR4. Have a bunch to go through. Focus spot on on some and soft on others even with both priorities on focus and tracking moved to -2 case 1.

Will know more in a couple days when I go through but proud of my daughter. With this game it gives her 28 career shutouts, good for #2 in the schools history. Proud Dad!

My daughter the keeper (senior).

QUOTED IMAGE

Congrats! It's always good to be proud of your children.

And don't take this the wrong way, but I enjoy the faces they're making in a lot of your pics. :)

I had better luck/good results on Saturday, shooting in bad light, at like 1/100th of a second, which was surprising.
I tried using spot metering and spot focus this time, as I was trying to get precise focus on an owls eye from like 30ft away through the trees/branches.

The camera/Tamron actually managed to get proper focus, even using off-center AF points. So I was happy.

At this point, I'm going to just keep working with the camera, and hopefully see results improving. It's very likely user error/technique now.
Although the Tamron has always been a bit iffy with AF, on either of my bodies. Mainly in AI Servo, at +400mm.

Although it was hunting a bit on Saturday, but I really can't blame the camera/lens much, since it was just so dim/low contrast and I was at F/7.1 or F/8.

Nice detail on the owl. Did you have to micro adjust your Tamron? I am trying to get mine dialed in after sending the 7D back to Canon.
