looks like your lens is front focusing and needs calibrating

This camera does not like AF point expansion at all in contrast to 1DX or 5D3.

Interesting comment...one that I think I share. Care to elaborate on this a bit?

thx

With surrounding AF assist point expansion( 4 or 8) is activated, the resulting images were not very sharp, also initial focus acquisition is quite slow.

I don't think it's front focusing, we need to know more about your settings, but I would guess that the camera chose a focus point on the closer object (the tree branch) which for many AF settings is the default behavior. 1D3 would do this too if left to it's own devices.

Looks like front focusing. f4 will give very little depth of field, unless the bird was about 20 feet away.

I think I see both air movement and camera movement in that shot. Even the "in focus" parts are not clean.

How much of a crop is this, if any? Can you post it with your AF point showing? Like Cyber, I think the camera picked up the closer area to focus on.

I think I got my AF tuning about good, or very close to now. But, shooting today, I saw 5 frames in a row front focused by quite a bit, for "no apparent" reason.
I was in AI Servo, Case 2, tracking a Nutria. I could have/maybe should have used One Shot, but I wanted to see what AI Servo would do.

I even had the sensitivity set to -1? or whatever the lowest is, I forget. I don't see any reason for it to front focus that much outta no where.
Then again, AI Servo on this camera, even with Case 2 set to the lowest settings, seems a bit twitchy/too fast yet sometimes.

Ive noticed AI SERVO on subjects in water seems to pick up the water rather than the subject, especially when contrast is poor. I avoid using SERVO unless its a bird in flight or a subject moving fairly fast on the ground, and if in water best only to use SERVO if contrast is very good. Seems to be an issue perhaps with this camera ?

Hey Guys,

I went through this topic and I am now a little bit concerned about this matter since I am about to take my 7D mk II within next couple of days, just wanted to know that whether the focus issue has been fixed or not? because there is no chance to revert faulty device back ...

thanks in advance
