Aha, yes the nifty is well "well known" for it's sketchy AF. I would not judge any camera or setting based on that particular lenses AF performance.
It's great when it hits but that old AF motor tech is really bad...

Agree again.

Could it be my imagination ? Wishful thinking ? Maybe I'm just nutz.....
For those who still aren't thrilled, would someone please experiment and verify ?

Today I shut off the BB focus and went back to the old fashioned way of doing things using the front shutter release button. Am I getting a faster and more accurate AF lock ? I'll play more tomorrow weather permitting.

I don't think you nutz or maybe we both are but I recently thought I was having focusing issues so I set the camera back to default settings and started over, I did notice a difference between focusing with the shutter button and using BBF. Using the front shutter button did appear to respond a bit faster.

hmmm.... I'll have to test this. That doesn't make sense, but you never know lol.

I've never used the default meter/focus on this camera. Always BBF. So worth a try I guess...

I was using my 60d again last weekend, and while
Some images were out of focus sometimes, it was not as severe as the 7d ii can be. Although, maybe it's in part of the larger af sensors or sensativity that make the 7d ii grab onto other things and move further more often.

I could never get used to the BBF. I keep trying but I prefer keeping the shutter half depressded. Everyone keeps telling me to use it by my BIF shots don't suffer. Old dog I guess.

I just received an email indicating my body is already shipped back my way. Round trip will be 8 days. That's pretty good, if you ask me. I can't wait to give it a second go.

I tried shutter focus last night and didn't notice any difference I don't think. But I'll test again today.

Yeah, BBF can be weird at first, but I like it now.

Also it's nice you can have diff focus setups with BBF. I have the current settings on the regular BBF then 4pt expansion with case 6 on th AE lock button.

When I hold the dof button, I switch to one shot.

"but" my BIF shots don't suffer.

My spelling and "close to" words is worse than normal. Using my wife's iPad is not in my element. I'm using my iPhone as a hot spot. The tower is over 40 miles away so I have a booster and the signal can fade in and out. Gets a little frustrating at times. :-)

When I was out shooting today, and reviewing images on the LCD, they looked soft/out of focus to me.
Maybe in part of low/no sharpening on the JPEG preview/compression of it, or the LCD glare/ect.

But looking at them on the PC, they look ok/not nearly as soft. Still not razor sharp, but quite sharp for Raw.

Not sure what the deal is, but maybe I should turn up sharpening in-camera to get a better idea of what I'm capturing...
Or just know it's not exactly accurate.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I feel exactly the opposite most of the time. Look great on the camera and then when I get them out they look nowhere near as good.

I still do wonder if some softness is from a more aggressive AA Filter + smaller pixels.

I took about 40 shots of this shoveler today, on a tripod, 1000/th sec +, with IS on, and really none of them were very sharp. All like this, or worse.
Maybe I need to experiment more with Panning IS mode instead of full IS. But, it gets too shaky with no IS.

The AF point could have been in a better spot on this shot though, which also could be part of the issue.
It's annoying the AF points in the viewfinder dont line up with the real sensors.

I need to run a test of my own, to see exactly where they extend to.

Focus Point is in a bit better spot i feel like, but even worse results. But, I think the plane of focus is in the right spot.
Unless the heat was really screwing things up. It was around 65-70F.
