It focused right where I was pointing which was between his nose and his eye's, Im not fond of eye in focus and the nose out of focus so on something this big I will, well I call it "Pull" the focus forward by shooting him in front of his eye's, I watched the focus points and shot when I was hitting where I wanted the focus

OK, I guess I need to try this. Does the active point wander around randomly and you fire when it's right? Wouldn't single point do the same more predictably?

Now to find a moose to practice on

Ya it definitely works on stuff like this if you ask me, and I don't feel I have to clamp down a single point on say the eye, it all feels more liquid to me

Well, when it's moving constantly, trying to refocus over and over in One Shot would probably be even less successful?
But, I could always try it out.

The 500 is better of course, but I've used the new 100-400II, and even with the extender, it was quite good.
I'm still tempted to sell some stuff and get that to compliment the 500.

Anyways, today seems to have gone better. Was using Case 2 again.
Someone suggested using -2 Sensitivity, and +1 accel/decel. I'll have to experiment with that more too.

Have you sent the body to Canon yet?

I use Ai servo exclusively and BB AF. You can tap the BB to focus and let go and as long as the object stays in the focus area, you don't need to refocus and you can just fire away.

The answer to your question is absolutely not Matt. If your still getting junk you need to look at what is going on with your stuff, But at this point you must know that this camera is not at fault build wise. thousands of us have proved it over and over. I shot this last night

That image (to me) is the "bees feckin' knees" I'm no expert but to see the detail in the whites and the blacks whilst seeing the highlight in the black eye is what I aspire to, having encountered the failures of my attempts so far to record so many black faced/eyed bird in Oz. Whether in camera or PP, it's excellent and has inspired me to achieve better.

I use AI SERVO all the time apart from stationary or slow moving subjects. I'll try it all the time for a week and see how things turn out ;-)a

I might become a convert :-) Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say :-P

I think the fact that I can focus track karts accelerating or decelerating towards me at a rate greater than any form of wildlife (60-90MPH at 3G's) is proof positive that AI Servo was designed or at least capable of "all out speed" movement. The fact that it works for static or slow moving objects is a plus :)

Humm, try focusing on something the size of a falcon in a stoop doing in excess of 150mph.

Its true the little pieces of animals in movement can be so fast. Try shooting over 1000lbs at 25 feet while you about lay on the ground trusting he is in a good mood lol ,..and not get some camera shake

O Ya ,...AIServo Case 6 with some tweeks lol ,..centre group ( 15 points )

I don't think the actual speed of an object is what matters to AI Servo focus tracking. I expect it is easily capable of tracking an airplane going 500 mph, but might be challenged by a dragonfly flying at 10 mph. It's because of the different distances to the subject and the consequent differences in lens adjustments needed to keep the subject in focus.
