Jeff, I'm glad that Canon got you squared away. Looking forward to more photographs from that delightful piece of Earth you live on!

Steve

As you say it's the results that count.

If you have an area in the photo that is somewhat clear, but nothing is crystal clear, either there is a shutter speed issue or a lens issue. Where to focus is both a camera and lens function, but the clarity ultimately then falls to the user for a good shutter speed and the lens for good and properly aligned optics. There could be a rare situation where there is an problem with the AA filter interfering with IQ too, but that seldom comes up as an issue.

TS-
While your examples are true, There are many other reasons that a photo does's produce an properly sharp (to capability of lens and sensor) image. Technique, despite a fast shutter, fighting IS, excessive/improperly dampened mirror vibration or even an improperly behaving Ai Servo moving /tweaking Af when shutter is open. I suspect one of these last ones were impacting Pondrader and Big Country.
as issue for the extreme corner cases

That is why I send my stuff to NJ. I live in Canada and it is a real pain. Warranty shipping labels only apply in the US so I have to ship on my own dime. Canon USA does not ship to Canada so I use a parcel service just over the border. About a 1 ½ hr drive but it is worth it from the horror stories I have read about turn around times up hear. Wha if they don't get it right the first time. Sometimes my wife and I spend a night in Grand Forks or Fargo.

I don't really want to do it. I'd rather keep it in Canada but even if you read about Archibald's experiences I'm not the only one. They hate warranty stuff regarding focus. My brand new 70-200 2.8 II needed +13 MFA at 200MM and 0 at 70. TO told me it goes to +20 and sent it back. Canon USA encouraged me to send it in and NJ found a mis-calibrated board and now it doesn't need any MFA in my 5D3. After that and my 300L fiasco I cancelled my CPS membership.

Jeff was lucky his wheel fell off so they had to work on it. I'm going start getting him to buy my lottery tickets :-)

I never even tried it on my 7D2 until a few weeks ago as I did a test for someone here.

200mm @ 2.8. AF is on the stem. Now that have FoCul working it is so fast and easy I'm gong to run all my lenses and body combos through just for something to do.

QUOTED IMAGE

Looking at the green tomato posted, and assuming you used Spot Focus on the stem, I am guessing Focale will tell you MFA= - 8 for that focal length and distance . (to my eye using this Web post, it looks like the stem is sitting in-focus right at the front edge of the whole dof.) Pls let me know actual result from running it.

My reply was to the fact that there was an area that seemed to be in focus, but not any one thing in that area was sharp. That is either a shutter speed, or a faulty lens. My reply isn't for those cases where you focus on an object, and the final result shows focus landed elsewhere. Issues there could involve the camera.

Now as to using AI Servo on a non-moving vs moving target, that brings up different issues. For these focus tests, I assume static subjects were used, and you should then use One Shot, especially if you are using 3rd party lenses, but really for any lens, so there we are back to user settings if that is the issue.

Or mechanical issues in the AF mechanism, mirror box, or shutter mechanism inducing 'movememt' into the image. Thus the area where they focus fell still won't be as sharp as expected. It is my understanding that this is what Pondrader was experiencing on near all of his shots, even live view.

Live view uses a different AF system/algorithm, and mirror issues won't affect this because the mirror is up for live view. We can postulate alot about what is up, but as Canon uses a pretty standard answer for about any AF/IQ issue, it is hard to tell.

I have sent cameras in, and have gotten the same responses, whether it was a noise/ISO issue, or an AF issue.

I was finally able to get a few shots yesterday after getting it back from canon. It was a real over cast day yesterday I have not done any MFA on it yet.
I was on a small farm yesterday so here are a few shots nothing too glamorous.

Yep, happy for you, too. I know it's bad when it's bad, but it's really bad when you know it's bad.

So true, I missed a super chance for a wolf this weekend but hey thats how it goes, super busy this weekend. I only had the chance to shoot around the yard. I'm really liking what I'm seeing.

Of course Im just walking around hand held and shooting what ever comes by.

Really sad to read about all the fuss with this camera body. I "really" want to get one, as I miss shooting my grandson's football games with the old 7D1. I was looking at a refurb on their site............... maybe a better option than buying new and taking a chance on a problem body?

First... I had a rear wheel malfunction, second... all problems with image and focus were the direct cause of a tech working on my camera for what ever reason. short of that it is the best thing since sliced bread.

Oh! I guess I didn't read the entire thread. Well, more to think about, then.
