So far got 3 answers : all purchased at Adorama, but only one with serious focus problems and returned. Can we confirm that the defective batch, if any, is not only with B&H?
2 kits and one 'body only' : one of the kits had problems. Can we say that the problem is on both: kit and body only ?
What I am trying to do is a sort of statistic that would help us understand what to do. Is it worth having it replaced ? There are probably thousands out there that are satisfied so one might try his luck and have it replaced.
I think my problem is more related to distance: shots with the 24-105 do not show the problem. Most problems are with the 100-400, far subject and center point focus. Unfortunately didn't have time to test it more.

I bought from adorama and have issues and so it's going back tomorrow. Lots of front focusing, not correctable with mfa. I have had the 40D, 7D, and 5DIII and know what I'm getting ain't right.

Not sure what the default setting is, but it was turned off and when I turned it on the lens now searches more consistently for focus. Thanks for the tip :)

[AF] Lens drive when AF impossible

Question. Now that it searches consistently, did it acquire focus?

I have had the body for about a week now. My testing has been limited to indoors and low light. I find that the camera is very challenged with my 100mm 2.8 IS macro lens. If the subject is very out of focus it seems the camera has trouble finding contrast and the lens doesn't seem to even try to focus. Using all factory settings. Anyone else has an similar issue?

This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough that I wonder if I should return the body for another? Or is this new focusing system just quirky like that?

I have similar issue when the 7D2 is mounted with 1.4x TC II and EF 300mm f/2.8L IS. It was able to focus, but substantially slower than when 7D2 mounted on the bare 300/2.8L IS lens. For outdoor in miserable winter lighting condition, the 7D2 works fine with the TC. I am still keeping my 7D2 as the focus is spot on and ISO 16,000 is surprisingly usable. I suspect a firmware update could fix the issue.

I must have a good copy. 60 processed head shots for an org chart. I had one I'd consider a missed focus, and that is easily attributed to operator error. Still acceptable focus for what we need it for.

Center point focus, 24-105L lens, no mfa, Body only from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I hate buying thing brand new and have to keep my finger cross. I think, the 6D will be my 5D3 partner.

There's a seperate topic for folks who are NOT having problems with their 7D2.

No expansion uses the center and 4 points in a plus pattern and surround uses center plus the 8 points adjacent to the center point.

Thanks. Again, on the 1D how much you let it "expand" was adjustable. no difference in terms though.

Interesting. That could be handy, although the 7 seven total setting in the 7DII seem like they should cover all of ones needs.

There's a threadful of people having issues with that, too.

Maybe I've been lucky in the past, but I've never had a problem with a Canon DSLR before. That includes a 300D (took me awhile to realize I needed to shoot that camera raw, and correct white balance), 450D, 550D, 60D, 7D, and 5D3. I hit the ground running with my 5D3 and was delighted with the photos from it the first day, and every day after that (over 2-1/2 years now).

7D2 is another story... :(

The 5D3 is the only "advanced" one I'm not seeing any reports of issues with, which is making me tempted to suck up the price and get it. I don't have the patience to be playing around with sending it in and hoping they decide to fix it.

When it first came out I seem to remember a focus issues thread. Oh yeah and it leaked light.

My 5D3 was from the first batch and it had the light leak problem, which wasn't a big problem. I waited almost a year before I sent it for the fix. Got it in March and waited till the dark cold depths of the following winter to send it in.

5D3 had its share of growing pains, e.g. light leak. I do not remember focusing or softness being a widespread problem. I do remember that noise was bandied about :) Some of that was solved by learning how to process the files. Having said, that my 5D3 has been for the most part trouble free.

Back on track, I will be sending my 7d2 (body) back to Adorama. They seemed to take the news in stride. I ordered a replacement from them during the recent flash sale of the 7D2 for $200 off - so it is worth the effort to see of the problem is QC related or if what I was seeing is simply the nature of the product. If that does not perform better, I will have to look elsewhere.

Gjoyce3, I am in the same boat; just returned 7d2 because it was front focusing and could not be fixed with MFA...heard about the adorama Fire sale today and ordered another which will be here tomorrow. Fingers are crossed second time is a charm. I also have a 5d3 and it was great out of the box and no problems since. Maybe the "B" team assembles and tests everything that is not a 1D or 5D...
