That's definitely not a dust bowl! You may have a bunch of uninvited POTNers show up at your front door one of these days if you keep posting these. ;-)a

Indeed, reminds of my "other" home, which I miss so dearly. It turns out I spent all the summers of my youth about an hours drive from Mr Rader and his pets.

Funny Lester I'm a spot shooter and Canon is not impressed with spot and don't wish to see any images shot using spot. I don't have any plan's to change the way I shoot.

Jeff,
I am 100% WITH YOU.
in fact with my 7d original, I shot 90 percent of my high school Sports images with spot focus and servo with 98% proper focus.
Mostly using single point these days successfully but basketball is coming for my youngest and I'll probably need to go back to spot.

Canon I believe one does not support Spot for moving targets but each to his own for whatever works for them. I use it for stills, etc when I want the eye in focus but not for moving targets. But that is just me.

The part about “Precise” is not the same as “accurate!” is interesting.

This is a scary thread! I've been thinking of upgrading my 60D to a 7D2 and I primarily shoot wildlife considering where I live.

Is this focus issue widespread, or only on a small number of bodies? Looks like I'll have to hold off on that upgrade until things are fixed (if ever).

Unfortunately, things tend to get hyped up here at POTN. I bought my 7D2 almost a year ago knowing about all the scary talk, and took a chance. I have not had any problems other than those I caused myself.

I found my bird photography improved with the 7DI and spot no end.

Single point is fine if you can fill the frame with a subject but with birds in bushes spot gives much better discrimination to avoid clutter pulling focus. I will not change any time soon either.

As a point of info I have found no difference in sharpness with spot and single point with in-doors light levels using SRF resolution tests.

I am sure Canon have their reasons for the policy but I am not sure what it is; I doubt the folks in the 1st line help realy know either, they just follow policy.

Sampling a smaller area of the subject, the AF system is able to view even less subject detail, contrast and texture, especially if shooting multiple frames in a fast sequence. In many instances with moving subjects, in fact, doing the opposite (expanding the size of an AF point with either AF Point Expansion or Zone AF) can deliver more consistently sharp frames. In general, as a rule of thumb, Canon does not recommend Spot AF for most situations where AI Servo AF is being used to focus-track a moving subject.

If you can keep the spot on an area with contrast, it will track. The writer is pointing out that that may be difficult (and to avoid 1000 page threads about how spot AF doesn't servo!)

But are these issues very commonplace or isolated? Sounds like cams were bought, returned and bought again with similar issues recurring on multiple bodies.
