It actually doesn't bother me as long as they can fix it which IMO they did.
Case 6, 65 point zone a few weeks ago. I didn't spend a lot of time editing. A quick run through LR.

Wow, both of your sea gull sequences are amazing. My 7Dii could not accomplish that when in zone focus, ever. I would love to see which focus points were active in those shots. Mine has been back to Canon in Costa Mesa twice. They found nothing wrong with the auto focus and made some electronic adjustments. No improvement. I am getting some decent BIF with center point and surrounding assist points but I never use zone anymore:

I am an unhappy bird photographer who no longer trusts his equipment, which is now "out of warranty". I had thought of buying another 7Dii as a replacement but that seems to be "throwing good money after bad". I will have to make up my mind before our late winter trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. I very much appreciate you and others in this thread sharing their experiences, both good and bad. There is much to love about the 7Dii but consistent sharp focus isn't one of them, at least for me. Thank you all for the info you have provided. "Misery loves company".

Sure. You will notice the first image is not as crisp and the cam is just pulling it in.

I'm beginning to think this is one big diabolical plot to get us to all upgrade to a1DX and help buy up an almost certain glut of $7K stock at a discount before the announcement of their latest and greatest. ;-)a

 Maybe we should call 1.0.5 the "crippler". That burst sequence was with 1.0.5 so it is working with me.

Interesting.... I use my camera in this manner, my AF system judges distance and focus and my sensor records detail. I always expect 98 out of 100 of my images to be in focus and useable, I take thousands a month, don't confuse smaller with less and Image quality with the size of your AF point, This camera was built for those that live outside of the normal main stream thats obvious in the amount of trouble some have had. While I like to listen to Rudy go on about Canon camera's nothing he has to say goes through my head when I'm feet from wildlife that can cart you off if they feel like it. I trust in my own experience and knowledge and camera skills to know just the way I want things set. the proof is always in the images everytime.

I forget the exact way the Canon rep put it to me, but along the lines of the camera building a "data base" of the shots in a series, each building on the other. (?)

Hey question, are you setting a starting point or are you letting the camera have at the first thing it wishes using 65 point's. ??

In answer to my own.... There was a time I would have eagerly jumped at the chance, but my bitterness over all this wants me to raise my middle finger in salute !

I use both initial AF point and no initial point selected.

I like the idea of a little head start, mine is set to centre so I can get on target a little faster ..maybe.. hopefully.

Jeff,

What is your next step? I did something extreme. I have a 1D Mark IV showing up tomorrow. It cost less than my 7D2. I'm going to shoot it for a while, then based on what I discover, I'm going to send my 7D2 back to Canon with that information.

I did have a long talk with a very competent person at Canon Professional Services yesterday. She said she's personally had many cameras that didn't play nice with a firmware release. That sort of surprised me. She said they'll be able to get things back to how they were previously. That did encourage me to some extent. I'd be lying if I said I am totally confident that will be the case. She suggested I send both the camera and lens to them next time and she's going to send me a shipping label when I'm ready... Canon will pick up the shipping both ways.

Been there... Done that.
I like your remedy best and recently went to sample a mk iv at a local shop. Hard to accept a backwards move in technology and a used camera, but it's harder still to argue with success.
I sincerely wish you the best, please keep posting with regards to your progress if nothing else.

Interesting Kim, your right I don't have the confidence, they didn't need the lens to make the camera ??, Im finding the more I use and tweak the better things get. I'm pulling the batt out at night which I never did before. I light sweet grass and chant a bit, yesterday I sacrificed a chicken. but mostly I'm just going to shoot it.

Interesting idea on the 1Div not one I'm willing to do. going back to 1.0.4 did make a big difference maybe 1.0.6 will right all the wrongs, ya I know wishful thinking. The way I see it we should have rolled back the minute it didn't work right and left canon out of it. it was the people {tech's} that did all the damage in my camera and your I believe. although I have zero understanding of what they did ??? People say " Canon Said " personally I cant get them to speak !! maybe I should call today ??

And the truth is we all shoot for fun, yes its true we expect the very best in our camera's and in the images we make but in the end Nature Canada will pay you nothing to have your image in there Calendar and if your in the Dec issue of Canadian Geographic,....well it pay's the same !! trust me. So before you give more money to Canon for the thing you love to do most, maybe get them to fix that camera or replace it. I know just my two cent's but hey we didn't make the firmware, we trusted in them
