A screen shot of one from the other day. Looking through a bunch, they are focused, but seem a little mushy - fine detail soft. Not as crisp as I have seen from some other posts. Also- birds in flight - it focused but lacked a fair bit of detail (similar to the sequence from DP on the gulls)

The 70-200's IS is very good and you are just over the rule of thumb for handheld shots and shutter speed for the second shot. A little under for the first. Focal length is 280 and you shot at 1/350 & 1/320. Have you tried faster shutter speeds?

They look to be fairly heavy crops, and thus a shorter shutter speed than the rule of thumb would be needed. On the other hand, if IS was on, a longer SS would be good. It looks to me that the DOF was too thin. Smaller apertures are needed for smaller subjects. They look pretty good to me though.

My Mark II just arrived, it is a refurbished, jumped at the deal they had for it even after reading all of Jeff's issues. Firmware is at 1.02.
It did have quite a bit of clicks on it, so wondering if it was a frustrated shooter sent it back. (4,995 clicks) My last refurb 7D I had 12 clicks.

Haven't had a chance to shoot yet, but seems like I should leave it alone for now and just shoot. Hope Jeff's camera gets back to where it was soon, didn't like the look of his blood pressure numbers!

Got it from the Canon store? I wonder why they wouldn't have updated it to the latest firmware?

Yes, that two day sale on refurbs they had last week. Does seem odd it wasn't updated. Maybe that is a good thing?

Maybe, but more likely 1.0.5 is a good thing.

If your gona shoot through branches and shrubs ya have to learn to put your focus squarely on the subject, you can pull focus off your hummer simply by confusing the AF into not knowing just what it is you want in focus. I use surrounding branch, an ear, what ever, to entice focus to my subject using Ai servo then lift my thumb using BBF and shoot. but thats just me.

Of course both were shot with Spot lol

8620,
In this bird shot, is this displaying about 1/3 of the full frame ? If so, you are way jumping the gun second guessing mushhyness. .

So if you are showing the displaying 1/3 full frame, I estimate your distance at 9ft providing about 9inches total vertical field of view. With this at 280mm and f6.3, you only get 0.09inches total depth of field. This seems to match the few feathers that are sharp in a thin dof.

Thanks for all the wishes folks. I'm back now and in the surgeons own words, "as strong as an ox"

My previous quad by-pass and this aortic aneurysm fix were both discovered by chance as I had no symptoms from either. That's a 2nd and 3rd chance I've been given at life so I aim to make the most of it. It's not how long you live but how you live that matters. But...............The Beast, as I call it, will have to wait a while and be confined to the back yard and a monopod until such time as I am checked for an endoleak in 6 weeks...............so...............none of this :-)

I feel for ya! After my shoulder replacement, I couldn't lift a camera for 3 months! Then it took another 3 months to readjust to it and feel comfortable again. Glad to hear the good news.

One more thing at 400mm with the 1.4III ext on does anyone else hunt for focus. mine never hunted in its life and now it does, I have to back it off 20 or 30mm then I get focus ??

Yup! Mine does since the firmware update. It was fine before and had me gobsmacked when I shifted to the mklll from kenko. Now I'm wondering what's changed? Ali I've doine since those straight out of the box pearls is update firmware and MFA. I guess I should have left well alone. I can't reproduce the original quality at all. These were my first shots with the triple combo straight out of the box with firmware 1.2
