Rod,
Twitching is NOT good.
Did you try reverting to 1.04 firmware?

No need. I didn't upgrade to 1.0.5
A 'clear settings' did solve the problem for a short while but it came back. As a work-around the camera is in one shot with '*' and AF-ON activating AI Servo with different settings under each button.

Maybe 1.0.5 can fix it but......

Rod

Cross posting here for this 7dii Focus Discussion thread (Jakes new name).
=>>7d Mark II on-coming subject AI Servo Tracking
FWIW. New example.
Oncoming frontal AI Servo AF ~45 miles per hour.
Although not a bird, some people have struggled with AF properly tracking oncoming objects. I used Single Point AF. 5 Shot burst.
All sharp and tracked AF.
The AF point was placed on and between the driver's side vertical edge of the grill, and the adjacent parking light.
For reference, the view finder AF point square is about 80% the size of the parking light mentioned.
Notice that off this area of the car, is quite low contrast.

7dii 400mm 1/1000 f5.6 ISO 2500 70-200 f2.8ii+TC2x iii Straight out of the camera jpeg.
TS = -2, Accel/Decl=+2, AF point switching=+2(not relevant with single AF pt.)
No crop.

Sorry. Slow WiFi socks. Might as well multitask, watch TV or something.

My guess based on nothing but gut and memory, is that maybe 15-20% of this thread are posts discussing any possible issue with AF. The specific number of people that have come to this thread with complaints, as opposed to mere questions is minuscule.

The vast majority of the posts are related to how to get the most from the 7D2, or sharing great images. Case in point, the last several pages have been very "focused" on specific in camera noise reduction settings.

Anyway, maybe I could change the title to;

7D Mark II - Focus Questions (or 7D Mark II - Focus Discussion)

Does that seem reasonable?

Excellent idea Jake.

Case 2 with TS set to -2 is a very good start for single or expanded. Here is another take. Many people who bird lower the TS to keep focus on the subject. The single point or expansion cluster can go off the bird for a second or two and not lose focus. As long as you get back on right away.

When I shoot zone AF I'm either in cases 5 or 6 and take advantage of increased AF Switching and Accel/Decel settings. One could do all this in case 1 but with 6 cases it is easier in the field. Case 1 is the base and the others are tweaks.

In April I put it to the test. I did some birding in cases 1, 2 5 and 6 and used single, expanded and zone in all the mentioned cases and it was a breeze. I was shooting larger - non erratic birds. If someone is going to try and shoot swallows the first day out it probably won't go very well so I never recommend that to new users. Veterans have to work harder at that. One step at at time until you gain confidence.

Digital. I just realized that the link/blogger is about 15 minutes away from where I live, My friend also recommended his 7D2 setting for me the other day and even emailed me the link, and today I realized it is the same link you posted here :), and Tim does workshops I maybe someday join one of his workshop My friend said he is really good for what he does. So I might sign up someday. Again thanks for the link.

Well my 7D2 arrived today. Looks nice and the handling is fine, though it is tiny after my 1 Series - might need a grip? AF seems snappy and accurate on my 24-70 and 16-35, though I am hoping to try it on my 800mm tomorrow - if the weather and the Kingfishers co-operate!
I have put the settings (AF, Back Button Focus etc) as near as I can to my 1DX so there shouldn't be too many mistakes! We shall see!

Goodluck John, I shot with the Eagles for 2 days and I really like the results I have some blurry images but I know it is the operator error (me :)) and not the camera. I am really happy with the sharpness this camera brings.

TS,
I tend to believe as you indicate in this last paragraph.(Rogue contrast picked up somewhere under the active Af point(s). It is One of the reasons I often shoot Spot focus for sports, with quite successful tracking. These uniforms with their letter place, eat etc would / should be fine for contrast.

I tend to agree, although there also may be something else going on. I have noticed that I may get different focus planes on the same subject switching from spot focus to center point focus to center point with expansion. As noted by TeamSpeed, center point with 8 point expansion seems most likely to grab focus somewhere other than where I want it.

One final post in this thread by me regarding our ISO discussions earlier...

Here is a before/after of a 100% crop of a 7D2 ISO 12800 shot from the last game. This wasn't shot ETTR at all, in fact it was probably about 1/3 stop underexposed. However I did take the raw and tweaked some sliders as I described before, then took the JPG (first frame of the animated gif) and ran it through an action I had developed (2nd frame of the animated gif). It works on each color channel, then a final set of filters on the combined channel. I choose 1 from 3 or 4 that I have developed depending on what I see for a noise signature. This one was already pretty clean, so I could use a less aggressive action.
