How many of you guy's expect focus to be achieved and how many check focus as you shoot using the green dot ?? And can you see the focus plain say on a face or animal as you shoot ?? looking through the viewfinder.

So i was just thinking of your post while sitting in my car...

Im looking through viewfinder and 65pt 4pt center lock point... im trying to figure out why its not following.....

So then thought of your thread.. the green dot. I never notice it so im trying to focus. Focus on a car in front of me and it is clear.. i mess w focus ring to out of focus it. Then focus... focuses... BUT im not getting the green dot.. am i not locking on? No people to try on...

All i see is lower right AF highlights but no green dot

Ok just paused from typing tried again... crud green dot is one shot lock... ughhhh lol... i have so much to learn as i didnt for the last 2yrs

Exactly. No green focus acquisition lock light in AI Servo, because AI Servo AF doesn't lock.

I expect focus to be achieved once I have dialed in a new lens.
99% of the time I'm using ai servo.
I can't ever see in the vf the focal plane dof.
The only time I check my photos for sharpness is with lower SS, or sports action.
The sports action to make sure I aimed and tracked properly. (Me not the camera)

Sort of an answer that may not be an answer.
I need glasses but can't use the VF while wearing them. I have adjusted the diopter setting to be able to read the info in the VF but it is unlikely that it is fine tuned to the point that I can determine how well the camera did regarding focusing.

So: I expect/hope the camera will focus correctly; I sometimes pay attention to the green dot. I mostly can't tell how accurate focus really was until the shots are brought up on my computer.

It seems that over the last 5 years, I have gone from 20/15 vision no need for reading glasses to barely being able to read a watch or top LCD screen without reading / cheater glasses and everyday 20/20 for distance. I need to zoom on the LCD screen to check any sort of sharpness. I should probably pop my left lens out of my readers for my left eye shooting and use the right eye to read the damn camera. I tell you, without the readers, all my captures look oof in the back of the camera. I just have faith that it's not the case and have to wait to get vpback to my PC to see the results.

I wear progressive Silhouette transitions glasses around the clock.. never take them off. and I can see the entire viewfinder and meter and AF as it moves across and animal bird or fox except in the brightest winter days, The glare and my glasses going completely dark in the cold and uv I have no choice but to go to auto and EC ...Manual is just not going to happen as the mater is gone for me then. the transitions are great for three seasons but the cold makes them double dark.

I guess to say getting old sucks is kind of a given at this point.

40 was the turning point for me, just went out and bought the real glasses and that was that.. I hate um but need um

40? If you're still even close to 40 stop complaining. You're still a baby. Wait around 20-30 years. It just gets worse and worse.

I need trifocals as my sight is crap at all distances. That said, they're of no bloody use here in Qld as the sweat drips onto 'em, or, due to the humidity, they fog up as soon as I put my eye to the cup I just can't get used to live view either and have never taken a shot with it.

I presume Qld means Queensland. We have places here just as hot humid and miserable much of the year, mostly in the deep south. The people there are used to it I guess, but its not my cup of tea. I have worn progressive lenses for many years and am so used to them I hardly notice I'm wearing them. I have no problem using them with the viewfinder except on very bright days because my glasses are also transitions and get so dark most of the features in the intelligent viewfinder are impossible to see. Luckily in that situation the most extreme setting of the diopter allow me to see almost perfectly with my glasses off.

Mark you and I are in the same boat,... At -30c I have a hard time even seeing through them into the tree's All though I can not take my glasses off

I guess the last half dozen posts or so could be considered "comic releaf" and we even stayed on topic as it is still a "focus discussion" albeit sans camera. From the bits and pieces in the various posts across the threads it would seem that a fairly high percentage of the people posting are on the high side of 50.

For the younger people just remember if you live long enough you could possibly get to be as bad at photography as I am.

AT -30C, which is -22F, I'm not traipsing though the woods looking for cute little red foxes. I'm snuggled with my blond fox at home.
