Maybe for video.

Who wants a 4MP sensor for stills?

Well, 4.8 sop almost 5 but the other specs look interesting. Sony clearly isn't standing still.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

considering 90% people just end up using 1280 or smaller for web and that's it...

Well, this 4.81 MP sensor would be equivalent to a 19.24 MP bayer sensor.

Only in colour resolution, not spatial resolution.

4k monitors are becoming more common, and internet connections keep getting faster.

Everyone shouts "5Mp is not enough!" but in order to prove a theory you make it work, easier to do it with 5MP than 36. Next step will be a higher res sensor. This is very interesting news.

Really great news however would you want to be an early adopter knowing that the tech will probably in a very short time (less than a year) be superseded to something more than double the pixel count.
Whilst I understand that the 4 plus mega pixels is equivalent in many ways to a much larger Bayer Sensor to me it would be a little silly to introduce a serious camera at this sort of pixel count.
I suspect that releasing it into the phone market first could be a tactic to prove the tech and give them time to improve fabrication of the new sensor so that larger pixel counts can be released at a later into the APS C market.

The 4.81 MP sensor will be first introduced in their smart phones. I'm sure they plan to produce a newer generation for their camera line with more MP after they've worked out the kinks.

I seriously doubt the 4.81 will be in their smart phones either. The article does say they's likely put it in the Z4 but since the Z1-Z3 all have 20 MP sensors I don't see it going over very well with Xperia users. I also don't many of them would like to have to give up 4k video as well.

Maybe now they have cracked into the "real" camera market they will make a phone which appeals to "real" photographers? who knows....

If it really has moving colour filters then it will probably take a while to get the snags out for video.

HTC tried the low resolution strategy with the M7 One ("better low light sensitivity", "better IQ"). It was a failure

Probably not physically moving, but electronically moving - either to change the colour of the filter over the photosite, or with no actual physical filter, but an electronic 'filter' that adjusts the sensitivity of the photosite to particular wavelengths.
