Determining value of lenses

What's the best way to determine a fair value for lenses you want to sell? I have a few I want to unload to fund another purchase but am not sure the best way to determine a fair value.

Search the Marketplace, Craigslist, etc to see what the going rate is.

Take a look at sites like keh.com and adorama- see what they are selling similar used items for, and drop your price a notch.

Between these two answers, I think you should have all the info you need. I'd only add that the B&S forum at FM is much larger, so check there as well for a better cross-section of data.

Ebay sold articles - only the sold ones, not the high prices that some people want for buy now.

yes this is really the best to gauge what they are actually selling for. Also looking on here at what the sold items have gone for in the past. If you went of Craigslist prices you'd probably never sell anything. Way too much stuff that is severely overpriced.

Keep in mind that on Ebay you will lose roughly 10% of your sale price and then of course another 3% for paypal so selling off ebay you can sell for a lower price and still net the same.

I've bought quite a few things off Craigslist that were fairly priced, so your assertion of Craigslist being severely overpriced may be severely overstated.

i'd go off of ebay sold listings, and the marketplace here...

craigslist is tough, if something is priced well, it usually sells quickly, and then the ad is taken down...so the ads that last up there are usually the overpriced stuff that doesn't sell

I would not use Craiglist as a price guide. The prices there vary wildly for the same item, and also you never know for what price it was eventually sold.

So to sum this all up, do a bunch of research of prices using a bunch of different means and then come to the best conclusion of what price you should set.

If it's priced right, it'll sell...eventually.

No ifs and or but the only barometer is actual selling price as you will find on e-bay. Folks who buy
used from B&H and Adorama do so for peace of mind something you cant offer. Asking prices for some
used Items can at times be quite laughable.

The problem with Craigslist is that you can't tell what sold and what didn't very easily... and also have no idea if the final sale price was negotiated down.

eBay "sold" listings is definitely the best way... Large marketplace, selling price is shown (not sure if shipping costs will show, which might be something to factor in). Just be sure to search for identical items, there are many similar named lenses that can be misleading.
