I haven't had a lot of real close encounters with any GBHs, at least any that lasted more than a fleeting moment. Last year, I moved from Louisiana to Atlanta, and my chances with GBHs and Great Egrets have greatly diminished.

On Monday, I was stalking small birds along the Chattahochee River when I saw a group of GBHs upstream and across the river. They were very actice - chasing each other around in what I assume was a territory dispute. I rushed to my truck, drove to the other side of the river, and double-timed it upstream. I found a nice spot with very cooperative birds, and spent several hours watching and photographing. I went back on Wednesday, which was a cloudy day (obvious in those photos) for another wonderful time. Looking forward to going back!

Thanks for looking, and C&C is welcome!

Thanks, John. I know how you feel. I've had moments with a lot of birds that, when it's over, I just say, "Wow!"

I've never had that moment with a GBH until now. The funny thing about these sessions was that they lasted so long. The first day, I even took out my phone and took a couple of shots. He was about 50 feet from me and I could actually move some without bothering him. The only time he spooked was when I saw an osprey across the river flying with a fish. I jumped up to try to get a shot and the GBH squawked and flew away. I sat back down and about 30 minutes later, he flew right back over.

The herons seem to be much more worried about protecting their fishing spots from other herons rather than worrying about humans.
