Well, there it is then, so I will probably adjust to it - not much choice really as I like the other features. Higher brightness would be advantageous though. I must get out and try it now.
Thanks to all who responded - the proof of the pudding will be in the eating - as they say.

I think you will get used to it. it's just different from what you are used to. In my case, i had forgotten that ANY Canon bodies had it any other way, since I've been shooting 1D etc primarily for a while. My old film bodies had it on the right as well.

I literally had to go and pick up my wife's "rebel" to confirm that you were not completely crazy! (your not)

It just seems that in the more affordable bodies Canon doubled up the job of the bottom meter, which on 1D, 7D2 etc.. is only to show EC and FEC.

All those people telling you the 1D bodies had this for forever so it must be fine please note there are no APS-C 1D bodies. Perhaps this problem is an effect of the smaller viewfinder? For sure I have no problem with my 1dx or 1d4 but having no 7d2 cannot comment on the difference.

It appears pretty much identical to the 1d viewfinder meter to my eyes. Not hard to read at all. Like many things 7D2, it does not have the smaller viewfinder that the older APS-C bodies do, it's quite good @ 100% view, 1.00x magnification!

From The Digital Picture review of 7D2
"It is hard not to love the 7D II's new viewfinder. This large pentaprism viewfinder shows a best-available full 100% field of view at a 1.00x magnification. Those coming from a Rebel/***D or **D model are going to especially love the 7D II's big view on the world and not having to guess where the frame edges really are. "

ie; 7D2 viewfinder is BETTER than many of my old 1D bodies.

I was quite surprised to realize JUST NOW that the 5D3 does NOT have the 1D 'normal" meter on the side? (don't have mine at hand, is this really rue) If so, it proves that adjusting to the change can be done! I did not even notice :)

Isn't it the same thing? There is still a scale on the right side of the 7D2. I currently don't have my 7D2 so I pulled out my 5D3.

It is not, the bodies that do NOT have the meter on the right combine both jobs in the one bottom meter display.

On a 1D, there are two also, but they are BOTH on the right hand side.

And, as has been noted before, the r-hand meter goes all the way back to Canon film bodies. That's where it is on my 1970s AE-1.

My first Canon had the aperture scale to the right and the exposure time scale below the screen in the viewfinder.
